DEL MAR, Calif. - After searching north, south, east, and west, trainer Darrell Vienna finally found the right spot for Janet, who got the first Grade 1 victory of her career on Saturday by upsetting heavily favored Tranquility Lake in the $400,000 Ramona Handicap before 17,569 fans at Del Mar.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Chris McCarron literally got his butt kicked in Saturday's Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks at Belmont Park.

McCarron flew cross-country to ride Starrer in the $350,000 Coaching Club, but was unseated three jumps out of the gate as Starrer, the 4-5 favorite, took a bad step and stumbled. She threw McCarron head over heels and kicked McCarron in the left buttock, leaving just a bruise.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Three weeks after Kitty on the Track stunned her connections with a close second in the A Gleam Handicap at Hollywood Park, she returns in a race she can win - the $70,000 Fantastic Girl Stakes at Del Mar on Monday.

Trainer Bill Spawr wanted a late-June or early-July start in an allowance race for Kitty on the Track, but was forced into the A Gleam when no other races filled. She nearly won her first start in 18 months, losing by a half-length to Go Go, the top female sprinter in California this year.

EDMONTON, Alberta ? Next Saturday's Klondike Handicap at Northlands will give Scotman, Alberta's 2000 horse of the year, an opportunity to avenge his disappointing performance in the Spangled Jimmy here July 7.

Eleven horses, including Alberta's reigning champion older male Code Name Fred and his archrival Run Joey Run, have been nominated to the 1 1/16-mile handicap that serves as the close of the Klondike Days segment of the Northlands racing season.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia ? Queen of My Nights will be the starting highweight Sunday in the $35,000 Nanaimo Stakes at Hastings Park, but the favorite is anybody's guess.

Eight 3-year-old fillies have been entered in the 1 1/16 miles Nanaimo, and a strong case could be made for at least four of them. And that doesn't include Ivy Lane, who was a front-running winner of the 6 1/2-furlong Emerald Downs Handicap on July 7.

AUBURN, Wash. ? Jumron Won will have to break from the outside when he heads a field of nine 3-year-olds in Sunday's 1 1/16-mile, $40,000 Tacoma Handicap at Emerald Downs.

Jumron Won will undoubtedly be favored off his sterling record of six stakes wins from nine starts at Emerald, including victories in all three of his starts at the current meeting. He is staring at a wide trip under a highweight package of 123 pounds, however, and he suddenly appears to be vulnerable.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Norberto Arroyo Jr., the winningest rider in New York in 2000, was arrested Friday night in the Bronx along with his father and younger brother. All three were charged with assault in the second degree and were to be arraigned Saturday night, police said.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Jockey Mark Guidry, a two-time leading rider at Arlington and currently atop the jockey standings, is leaving Monday to ride the Saratoga meet, which begins Wednesday.

Guidry's agent, Ronnie Ebanks, said Guidry has three calls at Saratoga Wednesday and he expects Guidry to be more active beginning Thursday.

Ebanks, who became Guidry's agent in May when Guidry parted ways with longtime agent Dennis Cooper, said despite his rider's leading position at Arlington, he has struggled to attract business.
