Cindy prepping for Oaks

DEL MAR, Calif. - Cindy's Hero, a respectable third over this grass course July 22, faces a serious test in a turf allowance race at Del Mar on Monday.

The winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last September, Cindy's Hero is the likely favorite against eight 3-year-old filly rivals over 1 1/16 miles.

Trainer David Hofmans considers Monday's race a prep for the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks on Aug. 18. "I know it's only 12 days away, but we'll keep it in mind," Hofmans said.

'Pistol' has shot at repeat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Bristol Pistol seeks to win the $133,750 Victoriana Stakes for the second straight year Monday at Woodbine.

Seven other Ontario-sired fillies and mares were entered in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, including American invader Lady Brook.

Bristol Pistol parlayed a decent effort in the 2000 Dance Smartly Handicap into a daylight score in the 2000 Victoriana, and will try to duplicate the pattern Monday. She closed wide from seven lengths back in this year's Dance Smartly to finish just two lengths back in fifth.

Gourmet Girl has rivals at her mercy

Benoit & Associates
Clement Hirsch favorite Gourmet Girl

DEL MAR, Calif. - Gourmet Girl's three rivals Sunday at Del Mar may as well lower expectations and aim for the next best thing to a win: survival.

While the Grade 2 Clement L. Hirsch Handicap offers ideal conditions for Gourmet Girl, the nation's top-ranked mare, her rivals face a tall order trying to upset her at 1 1/16 miles on dirt. Tranquility Lake has not tried dirt in 2 1/2 years; Nany's Sweep has not gone two turns in a year and a half; and Saudi Poetry has not won anything of consequence outside Kentucky. Going in, they look like sitting ducks for Gourmet Girl, age 6.
