$219,861 carryover at Del Mar

DEL MAR, Calif. - Two winning 38-1 shots on Saturday helped to create a pick six carryover of $219,861 at Del Mar for Sunday's program.

Saturday's pick six was difficult from the first leg when Parimac ($79.80) won by a nose over Royal Hill. The other winners of the pick six races were Smart Start ($19.60), Tempera ($3.60), Mega Gift ($39.60), Hilltown ($8.40), and Go ($11.60).

Tempera takes Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. - Even for an optimistic trainer, Tempera's nine-length win in Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes was a surprise for Eoin Harty.

"I thought she'd win, but I didn't think she'd win like that,"he said.

"I hate to sound braggish, but I felt confident."

Tempera gave Harty his first stakes win. In 2000, he became a private trainer for the Maktoum family's Godolphin Racing, operating a 2-year-old division in the United States.

Surprise! Scorpion wins Dandy

Michael J. Marten/Horsephotos
Jerry Bailey and Scorpion overtake Free of Love to win the Jim Dandy by a half-length. Congaree, the 2-5 favorite, faltered to finish third.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After watching Friday's six-furlong Amsterdam Stakes, trainer D. Wayne Lukas thought he made a mistake by scratching Scorpion out of that race to run in Saturday's nine-furlong, Grade 1 Jim Dandy Stakes.

But Lukas, who has made a career out of winning big races when nobody thought he could, did it again Saturday as Scorpion rallied past Free of Love to win the $600,000 Jim Dandy by a half-length before 30,871 at Saratoga. Free of Love, a

29-1 shot who put away 2-5 favorite Congaree in midstretch, held second, 5 3/4 lengths ahead of Congaree.

'Pistol' eyes Victoriana repeat

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Bristol Pistol seeks to win the $133,750 Victoriana Stakes for the second straight year Monday at Woodbine.

Seven other Ontario-sired fillies and mares were entered in the 1 1/16-mile turf race, including American invader Lady Brook.

Bristol Pistol parlayed a decent effort in the 2000 Dance Smartly Handicap into a daylight score in the 2000 Victoriana, and will try to duplicate the pattern Monday. She closed wide from seven lengths back in this year's Dance Smartly to finish just two lengths back in fifth.

But Ontario invader Stage Classic could spoil the party for his Western Canada counterparts in the Grade 3, 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds.

When Fancy As and Corporate Shuffle met here last July in the Graduation, both had defeated maiden special weight fields in their debuts - Fancy As at Stampede Park and Corporate Shuffle here.

Desert Vixen draws small but talented field

MIAMI - There are nearly 500 fillies eligible for this year's Florida Stallion Series, but racing secretary Bob Umphrey is having trouble finding more than six to run in the opening leg, Saturday's $75,000 Desert Vixen Stakes.

What the Desert Vixen lacks in quantity, however, it will make up for in quality. Blissful Kiss and Pharmstar are expected to head a field that may also include Ms Brookski, Wellesley, and "two or three maidens," according to Umphrey.

If it's dry, it's Baptize

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Bill Mott will have one eye on the sky and one eye on his horse - and he will try not to go cross-eyed. The Hall of Fame trainer wants to run Baptize in Monday's Grade 2 $150,000 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes, in which Baptize would be the starting highweight and the likely favorite, but since the colt's worst race came on a soft turf course, Mott is hopeful the rain will stay away.
