Private Ryan needs no

The lone speed in an otherwise paceless field is among the best bets in racing. That fundamental tenet of handicapping bodes well for Private Ryan's chances in Saturday's $100,000 Baltimore Breeders' Cup Handicap at Pimlico.

Physical may tell why Perfect Drift ran badly

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Perfect Drift, who ran abysmally last Saturday in the Belmont Stakes when he finished 10th of 11 starters, was sent to the Lexington equine clinic Hagyard-Davidson-McGee on Wednesday for a thorough examination, trainer Murray Johnson said.

"We sent him out to have a bone scan done," Johnson said. "When he came back, he was very bright, acted like he hadn't run a race. We checked him out and didn't come up with a pimple, so just to make sure, we're sending him to the clinic."

This time, Danthebluegrassman will run

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Six weeks after he was supposed to make his first start under the Twin Spires, Danthebluegrassman finally will make his debut at Churchill Downs.

But instead of running in the 128th Kentucky Derby - from which he was scratched the morning of the race - Danthebluegrassman will run in just the fourth-richest race on the Saturday card at Churchill.

Peanut Gallery top earner in wide-open race

ELMONT, N.Y. - A wide-open allowance race for female turf runners is the Friday feature at Belmont Park on the sunset racing card.

Six fillies and mares entered the 1 1/4-mile turf race, which has a $56,000 purse.

There isn't a clear-cut favorite in this conditioned four-other-than allowance.

Peanut Gallery leads the field in earnings with $179,368 and is coming off a decent fifth-place finish in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay against a substantially tougher field than she meets Friday.

Schu runs Private Son in feature

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Just last summer Sally Schu served as trainer Kenny McPeek's Arlington-based assistant. But Schu and McPeek parted company before the end of last year's Arlington meet, which meant Schu missed out on all the fun this spring, when McPeek had two early Kentucky Derby favorites, Repent and Harlan's Holiday, then went on to win the Belmont last weekend with Sarava.

It also meant that Schu was back out on her own as a head trainer, a position she had occupied before going to work for McPeek.

Attfield has newcomer on Lasix

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - After a slow beginning to the Woodbine meet, Canadian Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield has begun to pick it up lately. Last week, he captured the Ontario Matron Handicap with Extend and won a maiden special weight event on turf with first-time starter Perfect Soul, a promising son of Sadler's Wells.

Attfield will send out several live runners on Friday's card, including Kiskis, a relatively unknown commodity in the featured ninth race, for fillies and mares on the grass.

Top Hit had his tightener for Owens

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - When Notable Secrets won a minor claiming race at Hollywood Park on Wednesday, trainer Kory Owens felt more confident about Top Hit's chances in an allowance race on Friday night.

The victory by Notable Secrets at the $18,000-$20,000 level came in his second start of the meeting, and proved to Owens that the horse needed a start over the track to show his best.

"He lost by seven lengths last time against the same horses," Owens said of the field that Notable Secrets faced on Wednesday.

His progress has not gone unnoticed. Ledbury, a 5-year-old gelding, has been claimed out of each of his past three outings. He races for Bar None Ranches Friday.
