An 'Allamerican' win in Oaks

STANTON, Del. - As Allamerican Bertie was being led into the winner's circle after her convincing victory Saturday in the $250,300 Delaware Oaks, co-owner Elaine Klein was overcome by a sudden rush of delight.

"We're going to Saratoga with her!" she exclaimed.

The 6 1/4-length score by Allamerican Bertie is her ticket to the Alabama Stakes, a Grade 1 race to be run Aug. 17 at Saratoga. Ridden by veteran Larry Melancon, Allamerican Bertie took command from Alternate on the backstretch of the Grade 3 Delaware Oaks, then steadily pulled away to her first stakes win.

Magic Weisner does it right in Ohio

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Owner-trainer Nancy H. Alberts' strategy worked to the letter in Saturday's $300,000, Grade 2 . Magic Weisner, trained by Alberts, prompted the pacesetting Wiseman's Ferry all the way - never letting him open up more than a two-length advantage - then dug in gamely under Richard Migliore to win the nine-furlong race by a neck.

It was 1 1/2 lengths back from Wiseman's Ferry to third-place finisher The Judge Sez Who, who was three-quarters of a length in front of Peekskill. Only 2 1/2 lengths separated the competitive four-horse field.

Bonapaw takes Hanshin on cruise control

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Norman Miller eats, sleeps, and breathes Bonapaw. Saturday, just after Bonapaw won the Hanshin Cup, Miller had to give him a bath.

"I guess I can leave him in good hands now," said Miller, jogging back to the winner's circle after hosing down a sweaty Bonapaw in the tunnel beneath the Arlington stands.

In the winner's circle, Miller could relish what he said earlier in the week would be the "greatest moment in my life."

Hot fun at Horsemen's for overflow crowd

OMAHA, Neb. - Temperatures nearing 100 degrees couldn't dampen the enthusiasm for Horsemen's Park's three-day summer festival as an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 fans turned out Friday for opening night's four-race card.

Hot weather and large crowds have been the norm since Horse-men's Park's inaugural meeting in 1998, and on Friday the main simulcasting facility, which comfortably seats 3,000 fans, was standing-room only before Friday's first race at 6 p.m. Central.

After disastrous Smile, 'Deputy' runs right back

MIAMI - Trainer David Fawkes had been pointing Junior Deputy to Calder's July 13 Smile Sprint Handicap since the colt finished third in Oaklawn's Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap nearly three months ago. But after waiting all that time for an opportunity to compete for a $400,000 purse over his home track, Junior Deputy was eliminated leaving the gate in the Smile, lunging at the start before trailing the field to finish 14 lengths behind Orientate, the front-running winner.
