Market Garden takes Solano County Juvenile Fillies Stakes

VALLEJO, Calif. - Market Garden ($10.80) improved her career record to two wins in two starts with a one-half-length victory over Smokin Tempo in the $53,030 Solano County Juvenile Fillies Stakes on Sunday at the Solano County Fair.

Market Garden got a ground saving trip and angled out in the stretch as she closed gamely to beat Smokin Tempo, who had taken the lead in the stretch. Her winning time for 5.5 furlongs was 1:04.81.

Market Garden earned $29,760 to increase her career earnings to $49,890.

La Cinquieme Essai wins Prince of Wales

FORT ERIE, Ontario - La Cinquieme Essai, the only locally-based horse in the field of 12, struck a blow for the home team with a three-quarter length score in Sunday's $500,000 .

Becoming a stakes winner in his stakes debut, La Cinquieme Essai also ensured there would be no Canadian Triple Crown winner again this year.

T J's Lucky Moon had captured the first leg, registering an 82-1 upset in Woodbine's June 23 Queen's Plate, but faltered to finish 10th here after dueling into the final turn.

Grammarian wins Sunset Handicap

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Over the years, the $250,000 at Hollywood Park has been a prep for many important turf stakes. The connections of Grammarian, Sunday's upset winner, are thinking more globally.

After Grammarian won by a head over Continental Red, and survived a claim of foul, owner Lindsey Williams said the Melbourne Cup in Australia is a long-term goal.

A win in the Grade 2 Sunset Handicap was vital since it was Grammarian's stakes debut and first start in a graded stakes, credentials needed to gain access into the Melbourne Cup over two miles on Nov. 5.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Strike Smartly nailed entrymate Quiet Resolve on the wire to capture his first stakes on Sunday at Woodbine in the $336,300 Chinese Cultural Center, formerly the Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Stakes.

Strike Smartly raced about five lengths off the lead on the backstretch, as the more accomplished Quiet Resolve dueled with New York invader Speed of Light through moderate fractions. Quiet Resolve assumed command in the stretch, and seemed headed for a comfortable victory, but Strike Smartly rallied in the final furlong to prevail by a head.

VALLEJO, Calif. - Erica's Smile engaged Cinnful Bride in a hot pace duel and away heading into the stretch, holding off Benefit Party by two lengths to win the $46,980 Fairfield Stakes on Saturday at the Solano County Fair.

Erica's Smile ($9.60) covered six furlongs in 1:09.71 in winning the race for 3-year-old fillies as she scored her first stakes victory. Erica's Smile, who has three wins and three seconds in six starts, earned $23,510 to lift her career earnings to $73,910.

The bet must be paid out in its entirety on Sunday, even if no one correctly

Crowned Dancer wires Hollywood Juvenile

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A convincing victory by Crowned Dancer in Saturday's $103,800 Hollywood Juvenile Championship left jockey Alex Solis anxious for the major 2-year-olds stakes of the upcoming Del Mar meeting.

"The way he finished, it looked like he wanted to go on," Solis said.

Crowned Dancer led throughout the Grade 3 Juvenile, winning by two lengths.

Owned by Charlie and Karen Cono and the Eastern Sky Unlimited Trust, Crowned

Dancer ($7.80) finished six furlongs in 1:10.10.
