Wiggins meets older rivals

STICKNEY, Ill. - Wiggins would have been one of the favorites in last Saturday's Land of Lincoln Stakes, but rather than ask the promising Wiggins to start his season against stakes horses in a full field, trainer Tony Granitz pegged Monday's fifth race as Wiggins's seasonal debut. Wiggins, a 3-year-old, faces older horses for the first time, but there are only six of them and Wiggins can win this second-level statebred allowance sprint on class alone.

STICKNEY, Ill. - Classic Appeal's also-ran days officially are over.

Classic Appeal went winless in 2002, but after having throat surgery over the winter to improve his breathing, Classic Appeal has come back a different horse. He won his second straight race Saturday, crushing a solid field of Illinois-breds in the $100,000 at Hawthorne.

Mr. Technique upsets California Derby

Mr. Technique edges clear of Apalachian Thunder to win Saturday's $100,000 California Derby at Bay Meadows by one length in 1:47.65 for the 1 1/8 miles.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Mr. Technique ($20) benefited from a change in equipment and made a strong move down the stretch to win the $100,000 at Bay Meadows.

"He's a tough horse to ride and a tough horse to train," winning trainer Jeff Bonde said after his second victory in the California Derby. He also won the race in 1999 with Red Sky's.

Pimlico: Five in row for Love Happy

Love Happy (outside) outgames Pioneer Boy to take a neck decision in the $67,750 Fire Plug Stakes at Pimlico on Saturday.

Moving up in class after four straight victories made no difference to Love Happy.

A 5-year-old horse who was running against claimers until he was taken for $30,000 by trainer Howard Wolfendale, Love Happy ($4.20) outfought Pioneer Boy in deep stretch to get up by a neck in the $67,750 Fire Plug Stakes at Pimlico.

Love Happy, ridden by Ramon Dominguez, drew even with pacesetter Pioneer Boy with a furlong remaining and surged to the wire to win his fifth straight race since coming to Wolfendale's barn. He was timed in 1:09.76 for six furlongs.

Woodbine: Brass in Pocket rallies

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Brass in Pocket ($19.50) rallied wide to capture the $187,250 by a neck over Mysterious Affair at Woodbine.

Brass in Pocket trailed the 10-horse field early under David Clark, and was still second-last entering the turn. Dreams Go Bye set splits of 22.10 and 45.63 seconds while being pressed by Leading Roll, who opened up a clear lead at the top of the stretch.

Brass in Pocket commenced a five-wide bid on the turn, and edged by Mysterious Affair in deep stretch to complete six furlongs in 1:12.69.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A pair of Maryland invaders stole the show in south Florida, where Bop outlasted Take Achance on Me to post a three-quarter-length victory in Saturday's $75,000 Handicap at Gulfstream Park. Bop also set a track record, covering five furlongs on the turf in 55.10 seconds to break Texas Glitter's old mark of 55.60.

Cooksey injured in scary spill

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jockey Patricia Cooksey suffered multiple leg fractures in a frightening, three-horse spill in Saturday's first race at Keeneland.

Cooksey suffered a fractured left femur and most likely has fractures to her right tibia and fibula, according to Keeneland's track physician, Dr. Barry Schumer. Cooksey was transferred to the University of Kentucky hospital, where she was scheduled to undergo surgery, according to Schumer, who opined that Cooksey's riding career is likely over.

Badge of Silver out of Blue Grass

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Badge of Silver suffered a hairline fracture of his right front cannon bone Friday at Keeneland and will be scratched from Saturday's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, trainer Ronny Werner said early Friday evening.

Badge of Silver had a routine gallop Friday morning at Keeneland. Friday afternoon, Werner took him out of his stall to let the colt graze. Werner said he noticed Badge of Silver was favoring his left foreleg. X-rays were taken, which revealed the fracture.
