Smooth Jazz wins 'Commonwealth'

Smooth Jazz ($16.00) wins the Commonwealth Breeders' Cup Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Smooth Jazz sped straight to the front from his inside post, then easily rebuffed a midstretch challenge from heavily favored Crafty C.T. when capturing the $273,750 at Keeneland Sunday.

Smooth Jazz returned $16 after finishing seven furlongs in 1:21.73 over a fast track. A 4-year-old colt by Storm Boot, Smooth Jazz was ridden by Edgar Prado, who completed a sensational Keeneland weekend, having won the track's signature race, the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, aboard Peace Rules the previous day.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Trainer James Cassidy, with 13 seconds and only two wins from 53 starts at Santa Anita this meet, had his patience rewarded Saturday when British import Steelaninch, under jockey Victor Espinoza, won the $150,000 by a nose over 11-10 favorite Singletary, who was ridden by David Flores.

The victory gave Cassidy, a 57-year-old native of the Bronx, his third win from 54 starts at the 85-day meet, which ends next Sunday.

Flores lodged a claim of foul for alleged interference through the stretch, but it was disallowed.

Santa Anita carryover up to $567,642

ARCADIA, Calif. - For the second straight day there were no winners in the Pick Six at Santa Anita Park, resulting in a two-day carryover of $567,642.41 into Sunday's races.

It marks the second straight mammoth Pick Six carryover into a Sunday program at Santa Anita. Last week, when the carryover was $732,097, fans wagered an additional $2,240,313 on Sunday for a total purse of $2,972,410. There were three winning tickets worth over $661,000 apiece.

There were no winning tickets Saturday.

Sue's Good News impresses

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Sue's Good News won her two-turn and stakes debut with authority Saturday at Oaklawn Park when she drew clear by five and a half lengths over Lady Mallory in the $75,000 .

It was another two and a half lengths back in third to Mekko Hokte.

Sue's Good News($4.60), who ran her record to 3-for-3 with the win, sat in third early in the one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies, overtook Youcan'ttakeme past the quarter pole, and went on to win over a fast track in 1:37.78.

Tim Doocy rode the winner for Cresran Stable and trainer Steve Hobby.

Empire Maker gets the job done

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The sun came out, the temperature rose to seasonable levels, and the crowd was 19,392. Those were the only upsets Saturday at Aqueduct.

Empire Maker gave his connections just what they were looking for Saturday - a purposeful, though not taxing, half-length victory in the Grade 1, $750,000 .

Funny Cide, the New York-bred gelding, ran a strong race to be second, 7 1/2 lengths ahead of Kissin Saint. New York Hero, Senor Swinger, Indy Dancer, Sky Soldier, and Spite the Devil completed the order of finish.

No troubles this time for 56-1 Sir Cherokee

Sir Cherokee blows by Eugene's Third Son late to take the Grade 2, $500,000 Arkansas Derby at odds of 56-1 at Oaklawn Park on Saturday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Rack up one for the home team. In a 56-1 shocker, Sir Cherokee earned a trip to the Kentucky Derby on Saturday when he ran down Eugene's Third Son just past the sixteenth pole to win the Grade 2, $500,000 by 1 3/4 lengths at Oaklawn Park.

It was 6 1/2 lengths back in third to Christine's Outlaw, while favorite Man Among Men finished 10th.

Attendance for the day was 61,752.

Congaree impressive in Carter

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Congaree saved the day for trainer Bob Baffert with an impressive 3 1/2-length win in the $350,000 at Aqueduct Saturday.

Two races before the Grade 1 Carter, Baffert saddled the losing favorite in the Bay Shore, During, who finished seventh. In the next race, the Wood Memorial, the Baffert-trained Senor Swinger finished a well-beaten fifth.

Hairline fracture sidelines 'Silver' before Blue Grass

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Badge of Silver, who suffered a fractured cannon bone that resulted in his being scratched from Saturday's Toyota Blue Grass Stakes, was scheduled to undergo surgery on Monday at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital to insert a screw in the cracked bone, according to his trainer, Ronny Werner.

"He should come back 100 percent, again," Werner said Saturday afternoon at Keeneland.
