Eagle Lake captures WinStar

Eagle Lake ($18) wins the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff at Lone Star Park on Monday by 2 1/2 lengths.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Eagle Lake took the lead soon after the start in the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff at Lone Star Park on Monday and never relinquished it on her way to a two and a half length win over Little Treasure. It was another three-quarters of a length back in third to Magic Mission.

With the win, Eagle Lake gave her trainer, Cole Norman, a sweep of the two richest races run on a card of seven stakes worth $1 million. Norman also won the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap with Pie N Burger($15).

Aldebaran best in Met Mile

Aldebaran, who once finished second in five consecutive starts, wins for the third time in his last four races in Monday's Met Mile at Belmont.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Aldebaran shed his bridesmaid label in a major way Monday, splashing through Belmont Park's sloppy stretch and holding off Saarland by a neck to win the Grade 1, $750,000 before an announced crowd of 15,071.

Saarland closed from last to be second by three lengths over Peeping Tom. Completing the order of finish were Proud Citizen, Justification, the 4-5 favorite Congaree, Najran, and Wake at Noon.

Pie N Burger ($15) beats Bluesthestandard in the stretch to win the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Pie N Burger survived an early speed duel to win the Grade 3, $300,000 Lone Star Park Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths on Monday. The 1 1/16-mile race was the richest of seven stakes on the card worth a combined $1 million.

Bluesthestandard, the 3-2 favorite who was looking for his sixth straight win, finished in a dead heat for second with Maysville Slew.

Garnered outduels Speightstown in mud

ELMONT, N.Y. - Garnered prevailed in a seven-furlong duel with Speightstown to take Monday's $112,100 Jaipur Handicap by 1 1/4 lengths at sloppy Belmont Park. It was a half-length back to Whitewaterspritzer in third.

The Jaipur, carded as a Grade 3 race at seven furlongs on turf, was moved to the sloppy main track and downgraded to a listed race. Seven horses were scratched, leaving a field of five.

Cuvee ($3.20) captures the $174,200 Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs by 8 1/4 lengths.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Cuvee, bet down to 3-5 in a field of six 2-year-olds, easily captured the $174,200 Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs after overcoming a tardy start and gliding to the front after just a quarter-mile.

Cuvee ($3.20) ran 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.45 over a fast track. First Money finished second, 8 1/4 lengths behind the winner and another six lengths ahead of Exploit Lad.

Monmouth: Happy Trails takes derby

Happy Trails ($5.80) wins by 2 1/4 lengths over Stone Canyon in the Grade 3 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Happy Trails, who had never started in anything but a claiming race in his six-race career, split horses at the top of the stretch to win the off-the-turf Grade 3 Jersey Derby at Monmouth Park.

Happy Trails, the second choice at 9-5 with his entrymate Angelic Aura, ran the 1 1/16-mile race in 1:45.40 over the sloppy ground and won by 2 1/4 lengths over Stone Canyon, the 1-2 favorite. Angelic Aura finished third, another three-quarters of a length back, earning owner Sanford Goldfarb $70,000 of the $100,000 purse.

Front-running Astrid ($15.60) was wobbly through the stretch, but held off Fresh Tracks by a neck in the $100,000 My Juliet Stakes at Philadelphia Park.

Astrid, a 5-year-old mare ridden by Jose Flores for trainer John Dowd, set fractions of 22.41 and 45.49 seconds while shadowed by Fresh Tracks, the 5-2 favorite in the field of seven fillies and mares. Astrid drifted during the stretch, but refused to let Fresh Tracks get past her. A winner of 8 of 19 starts, Astrid completed the six furlongs on a sloppy track in 1:10.65

Taiaslew romps, derby next

CALGARY, Alberta - Taiaslew confirmed his status as the favorite for the June 14 Alberta Derby with an 8 1/2-length victory over Shawteesh in the one-mile Hoofprint on My Heart Handicap here Sunday afternoon.

Taiaslew, a Washington-bred son of Slewdledo, broke well from the outside post in the field of seven 3-year-olds and the outcome of the $40,000 race was never in doubt.

Cool Bender was a head in front after a quarter-mile run in 23.20 seconds, but Taiaslew's jockey Real Simard was sitting to Cool Bender's outside with what he described as "a ton of horse."

MIAMI, Fla. - Dancing Guy, whose form has tailed off over the past year, looked like his old self on Monday when rallying from last at the quarter pole to overtake fellow longshot Shotgun Fire for a neck victory in Calder's $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap. It was the 8-year-old's first win since he captured the Americana Handicap here on July 4.
