Big pick six boosts holiday handle

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Pick-six mania does not engulf racetracks in Kentucky with anywhere close to the frequency of Southern California or New York. Kentucky pick-six pools are considerably slower to grow, and, in general, fewer horseplayers focus on taking them down.

But once in a while, such as on Memorial Day weekend, the pick six becomes the talk of the track. The Churchill Downs pick six had not been won since May 17, and after six days of eluding bettors, the carryover heading into Monday's card was $342,497, sixth-highest in track history.

Battler Bob appears back in form

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It's not the best card of the Churchill Downs spring meet. With the third through seventh races on the Thursday program representing the very bottom of the proverbial Churchill barrel - three $5,000 claiming races, and two $15,000 maiden-claiming races - the inclination from horseplayers might be to take a pass until Friday.

Maker claim has nice post

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - We have already seen what she can do with young turf horses trying to win their maiden races or run through allowance conditions. Now, how will trainer Becky Maker fare in the claiming game?

Maker won an overnight handicap on turf here Saturday with Dancing With Me, who paid $67.20 to win, and 24 hours later she was back in the Arlington winner's circle after another grass race when General Lee, who like Dancing With Me had drawn in from the also-eligible list, won his maiden race in his turf debut.

Mountaineer: Eagle Time upsets

Eagle Time has suddenly learned how to win again.

A 6-year-old horse trained by Rick Jordan, Eagle Time was a combined 1 for 19 during the past two seasons. Eagle Time ($36.60) has now won two in a row, however, after his upset in the $77,900 Memorial Day Handicap at Mountaineer Park.

It was Eagle Time's first stakes win since he captured the Texas Derby in March 2000 at Sunland Park. Since then, he had lost all seven stakes in which he ran. He prepped for the Memorial Day by winning an allowance race at Thistledown.
