Kabel has tough call in Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It was Mobil's turn to shine here last Saturday and he made no mistakes, winning the Plate Trial to keep pace with his stablemate Wando on the road to the June 22 Queen's Plate.

Mobil and Wando, both sons of Langfuhr owned and bred by Gustav Schickedanz and trained by Mike Keogh, have split the last four preps on the Plate trail. Wando won the six-furlong Woodstock and 1 1/16-mile Marine and Mobil won the seven-furlong Queenston and 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial.

Todd Kabel, regular rider of both colts, will have a difficult choice to make.

Penthouse Prince figures in Bold Ruckus

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Penthouse Prince, a grandson of the late, great Canadian sire Bold Ruckus, should be among the favorites in Wednesday's $139,000 Bold Ruckus Stakes at Woodbine.

All 11 Ontario-sired 3-year-olds in the six-furlong dash are trying the turf for the first time, which makes the race a handicapping challenge.

'Snitch' to face older foes

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Wild Snitch will make her seasonal debut Wednesday in the $50,000 allowance feature for fillies and mares at six furlongs. Trainer Ben Perkins Jr. entered her in the Dearly Precious Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Saturday, but that race did not go when only four were entered.

Katdogawn best in Manhattan Beach

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Katdogawn overcame trouble to launch a late rally that led to her first stakes win in Sunday's $77,400 Manhattan Beach Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Sent off as part of a favored entry with Little Malvern, Katdogawn ($4.20) closed from ninth in the final quarter-mile to post an impressive two-length victory. Ridden by Mike Smith, Katdogawn ran 5 1-2 furlongs on turf in 1:02.77.

Eddie Martin Jr. earns NTRA All-Star Jockey Championship invite

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Eddie Martin, Jr., earned an invitation to the National Thoroughbred Racing Association All-Star Jockey Championship on June 20 for being the leading rider at host track Lone Star Park by the last race Sunday.

Martin won two races on the program to move to a one-win lead in the standings over Corey Lanerie, 50 wins to 49. Martin has ridden in the Jockey Championship one other time, in 1999.

Uphill Skier wins Open Mind

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Uphill Skier splashed through the slop to win the $50,000 Open Mind Handicap by 6 3-4 widening lengths Sunday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

The lone 3-year-old in the field of New Jersey-bred fillies and mares battled Whoops Ah Daisy, Fashion Idol and Primary Colors for the early lead through a brisk opening quarter in :21.98. One by one, those rivals conceded as Uphill Skier kept motoring along with Joe Bravo in the irons. She led by three lengths at the quarter pole and continued to increase her advantage under a hand ride.

Strait From Texas takes Nassau

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Longshot Strait From Texas mounted a strong stretch rally to capture the Grade 2 at Woodbine Sunday.

Strait From Texas raced well off a hot pace in the mile and a sixteenth test for fillies and mares. Mulrainy set fractions of :23.17 and :46.08 seconds while being stalked by One for Rose and Chopinina. The latter duo took over on the far turn, through three-quarters in 1:10.09, while Strait From Texas commenced a three-wide rally under Richard Dos Ramos.

Joey Franco captures Ack Ack

Joey Franco ($7.40) wins Saturday's $91,325 Ack Ack Handicap at Hollywood Park.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Joey Franco won his second stakes of the Hollywood Park spring-summer meeting in Saturday's $91,325 Ack Ack Handicap. Now, owner Jerry Frankel and trainer Darrell Vienna are hoping for a stakes hat trick in the $300,000 Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicap on July 5.

"It has to be in our sights," trainer Darrell Vienna said of the Grade 2 Triple Bend.

Mariensky romps on soft turf

ELMONT, N.Y. - The $150,000 may not have been won by the best horse in the field. It was won by the horse who handled Belmont Park's soggy inner turf course the best.

Mariensky, a mare who began her career racing on the soft turf courses of France, finally broke through for her first North American stakes victory Saturday, rolling to an 8 1/4-length score in the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay before 6,689 at Belmont.

Stakes works aplenty

ELMONT, N.Y. - With a fast main track and the threat of rain prompting management to open the inner turf course a day earlier than usual, many of the best horses on the grounds - including some of the favorites for Belmont Week stakes races - turned in workouts Saturday morning at Belmont Park.

In addition to Belmont Stakes contenders Empire Maker and Dynever, notables such as Harlan's Holiday, Evening Attire, Midas Eyes, Heat Haze, and Wonder Again worked Saturday morning.
