Starrer might be retired

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Starrer, one of the nation's top female runners, might be retired in coming weeks.

A persistent ankle problem that has prevented Starrer from starting during the Hollywood Park meeting will be evaluated later this month, owner George Krikorian said. At that point, a decision will be made whether Starrer will resume exercise or be retired. Starrer has not started since she won her third consecutive stakes in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap at Santa Anita in March.

Bullistic faces elders

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - In early April, Bullistic won a maiden race at Santa Anita by 7 1/2 lengths, a victory that came too late for him to be considered for the Triple Crown.

Instead, he was pointed for the Hollywood Park meet. So far, the racing schedule has not worked in the colt's favor.

Carson Hollow out for year

ELMONT, N.Y. - Carson Hollow, a Grade 1-winning filly and the New York-bred Horse of the Year for 2002, suffered a chip in her left knee that will require surgery, and she is likely out for the remainder of the year, trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said Monday.

Carson Hollow, a 4-year-old daughter of Carson City owned by Frank Stronach and Hemlock Hills Farms, will be shipped to the Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic in Lexington, Ky., where she is expected to undergo surgery on June 11. Dutrow said he expects Carson Hollow to return to the races next year as a 5-year-old.

Jets Fan a 'doofus' no more

SAN MATEO, Calif. - When Jets Fan first appeared in trainer Brent Sumja's barn, he was a "big doofus," according to assistant trainer Aggie Ordonez.

The 3-year-old gelding has turned into quite a racehorse and seeks his fourth straight victory in Wednesday's Bay Meadows feature, a $50,000 optional claimer at six furlongs.

Jets Fan has never finished worse than second in five career starts.

"He's learned something every time he's stepped on the track," Ordonez said. "You can see it in the mornings. He gets more from his gallops."

Wanted: Trainers title

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Dale Romans could be a little more discreet about it. After tying for the training title at the last three Churchill Downs spring meets, Romans has made clear his desire to win outright this spring. For an example of Romans's ambition to win, look no further than Wednesday's Churchill card. He has six horses in action on the 10-race program.

A sudden end and a promising start

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - What separates horse racing from other kinds of gaming are its agrarian rhythms, the thud of real life drumming beneath the game.

Take Sunday at Arlington, where one life ended and another began beneath a high blue spring sky. Wild About U was scarcely younger than a kid named Timothy Thornton when the day began; when it ended, Wild About U had died, and Thornton had begun a voyage he had dreamed about for a lifetime.

Sea Bloom has the goods to handle elders

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - It's a good 3-year-old who can beat older horses, and since Sea Bloom has already done so once at the meet, she appears to be a leading contender in the featured eighth race Wednesday night.

A 1 1/16-mile optional claimer on turf, the race drew six horses, including Titia and Marfa's Taxes, who are both in good form.
