Canterbury: 'Flying' faces pressure

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Nine older runners were entered in the $40,000 Brooks Fields Stakes, a race named in honor of Canterbury's founder.

The Brooks Fields - a turf race scheduled for 7 1/2 furlongs - will feature Flying Supercon, recent winner of the Honor the Hero Stakes. Flying Supercon has a pace-pressing style and will be making his first attempt around two turns. It appears he will have some company early in the race from Vito Corleone and last year's Minnesota-bred horse of the year, J. P. Jet.

Fly Borboleta a speed danger

ALTOONA, Iowa - Fly Borboleta and local star Sharky's Review head a field of eight fillies and mares in Saturday's $50,000 Wild Rose Stakes at Prairie Meadows.

Fly Borboleta enters the Wild Rose following the best effort of her 13-race career, a second-place finish to You in the Grade 2 Louisville Breeders' Cup Handicap at Churchill Downs. Fly Borboleta dueled through fast fractions in that 1 1/16-mile race and was beaten 7 3/4 lengths.

High hopes for Stormthebarricade

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Laurie Silvera has never been shy about pumping up one of his juveniles, and Stormthebarricade is no exception.

Stormthebarricade will try to live up to some of Silvera's expectations Saturday at Woodbine in the $137,750 Victoria Stakes, a five-furlong dash for 2-year-olds.

Silvera, who paid $25,000 for Stormthebarricade as a yearling, promptly got his investment back and more when the handsome colt won his May 11 debut, running 4 1/2 furlongs over a muddy track in 52 seconds.

Taiaslew defends his home turf

CALGARY, Alberta - Taiaslew, unbeaten in six starts in Alberta, will put his streak on the line here Saturday when he faces six foes in the 73rd running of the $100,000 Alberta Derby at Stampede Park.

The Alberta Derby, a Grade 3 race over 1 1/16 miles, is the highlight of the meeting, which winds up here Sunday.

Taialsew, a Washington-bred son of Slewdledo who was champion of his division here as a 2-year-old last year, has not missed a beat this spring for trainer Greg Tracy, winning two stakes by open lengths.

'Buckshot' in career form

AUBURN, Wash. - Do's Buckshot heads a field of six in Saturday's best race at Emerald Downs, a $50,000 optional claiming race for older horses at a mile.

Do's Buckshot, a 5-year-old son of Casa Dante, was claimed by owners Tim and Sue Spooner out of his career debut at Emerald for $8,000 in May of 2001, but spent the next 13 months recovering from a hip fracture suffered in the race.

Former rider now training Silver Donn

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Silver Donn, who came within a nose of being honored as the top 3-year-old in the province last year, makes his second start of the year in the $45,000 John Longden Saturday.

After his win in last year's B.C. Stallion Stakes, his fourth victory in a row, Silver Donn looked like a lock for the 3-year-old title. However, he was nosed out by Shacane in the Richmond Derby Trial, and although Silver Donn finished in front of Shacane in the B.C. Derby, Shacane went on to beat older horses in the Premiers and was given the title.

Ross also has good pair for Plate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - There will be plenty of talk about Mike Keogh, who trains Mobil and Wando for owner Gustav Schickedanz, in the final days leading up to the Queen's Plate.

But Keogh, it should be noted, is not the only trainer who hopes to be represented by two entrants in next Sunday's running of the 1 1/4-mile race for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.

John Ross also has a pair of runners for the Plate in Arco's Gold and Dance Engagement. Either is capable of a big effort in the $1 million showpiece.

Nelson's license in limbo

AUBURN, Wash. - The Washington Horse Racing Commission voted Thursday to suspend rather cancel the license granted to Eric Nelson, the would-be operator of Playfair Race Course in Spokane, Wash.

Nelson, a Las Vegas-based developer, had earlier announced that he would not run a live meeting this year at Playfair, and in a letter dated June 4 he asked the racing commission to rescind his license. Instead, the commission voted to suspend the license in order to maintain its regulatory authority over Playfair until outstanding issues are resolved.

Rare full field of 12

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Saturday's first running of the $35,000 La Verendrye at six furlongs looks like a rematch between Briara and Regal Heir, but that didn't stop 11 other fillies and mares from being entered.

One of those 11 rivals, double stakes winner Top Stage Dancer, was excluded from the race due to lack of earnings in 2003, which resulted in a protest from trainer Wendy Anderson for owner Rosemarie Zilkowski. Top Stage Dancer was placed on the also-eligible list for the race, something that hasn't been seen here in years.
