Summer Note starts up. Again.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Summer Note has made nearly as many comebacks as starts, and 11 months after he last raced Summer Note is on his way back again.

Summer Note breezed for the first time this year, going an easy three furlongs here Tuesday morning. Summer Note still is quite a ways from a race, but for a horse whose career has sputtered so many times, just breezing is a significant step.

"So far, so good," said trainer Richard Hazelton. "He was down in Florida training for about 70 days before he came up here."

Raging Fever: Is she vulnerable?

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Her presence is a boon for Arlington Park, but a drag for the other horses in the race. Raging Fever is casting a long shadow over the Grade 3, $175,000 Chicago Breeders' Cup on Saturday, the first graded stakes of the Arlington meet.

"Unless something happens with Raging Fever, we're probably not going to come run," Donnie Von Hemel said Thursday morning. Von Hemel entered See How She Runs in the seven-furlong Chicago BC, and See How She Runs would have been a legitimate contender. But Von Hemel wants no part of Raging Fever.

'Spectrum' clearly one to beat

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Full Spectrum became a shorter price for Saturday's $50,000 Miller Lite Stakes at Lone Star Park on Thursday morning when her chief rival, Distinctive Code, was declared from the race.

A foot abscess will keep Distinctive Code from running for an undetermined period, although her trainer, Larry Robideaux Jr., is hopeful she might be able to make the $50,000 Suthern Accent at Louisiana Downs July 12.

Burning Roma back on the turf

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Trainer Heather Giglio watched with amazement as Volponi won the 2002 Breeders' Cup Classic, and the "what if?" question flashed through her mind.

What if she had run Burning Roma in the Classic? After all, Burning Roma had just beaten Volponi in the Meadowlands Cup.

It was a thought that passed quickly. The 1 1/4-mile Classic distance was simply beyond Burning Roma's scope.

Funny Cide confirmed for Haskell

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Bob Kulina, his meet suffering from excessive rain, finally got some good news Thursday morning.

Kulina, the vice president of Monmouth Park, found a welcome message from Barclay Tagg on his voicemail.

"We're planning to come with the horse," the trainer said. "We just wanted to let you know that, if that helps you."

The horse, of course, is Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. The race is the $1 million, Grade 1 Haskell Invitational on Aug. 3.

This one's a biggie for 'Ivana'

MIAMI - Ivanavinalot has already won the Grade 2 Bonnie Miss Stakes and competed against the best of her division in the Ashland and Black-Eyed Susan Stakes this season. But the queen of the local 3-year-old division may be making her most important start of the year when she returns home against six other 3-year-old fillies in Saturday's $100,000 Office Queen Stakes at Calder.

The 1 1/16-mile Office Queen will serve as the feature race on a 13-race card that also includes the $40,000 Linear Handicap, scheduled to be run at five furlongs on the turf.

Bop lays over Punch Line field

Colonial Downs in Virginia is known for attracting huge fields of horses for its turf races. So why has the track's first turf stakes race, the five-furlong, $50,000 Punch Line Stakes for Virginia-breds on Saturday, attracted only six horses?

In a short word: Bop.

Fudge Fatale best of winning bunch

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Five of the 10 3-year-old fillies entered in Saturday's $75,000-added Bay Meadows Oaks are stakes winners. But Fudge Fatale, who will be making her stakes debut for trainer Beau Greely, could be the one to beat in the 1 1/16-mile turf race.

Fudge Fatale showed good speed coming down the hill at Santa Anita in April, when she won her maiden while making her fifth career start. She finished third in a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint in her next start, then went wire to wire May 24 in a one-mile $80,000 optional claimer at Hollywood Park last time out.

Lincoln: Top weight for 'Intrusion'

LINCOLN, Neb. - Real Intrusion carries high weight of 122 pounds in a field of eight in the $15,000-added Matchmaker Handicap for Nebraska-bred fillies and mares at one mile.

Real Intrusion won the Orphan Kist Handicap at Fonner Park and the Bluegrass Handicap here while sprinting and should be favored Saturday for leading trainer David Anderson. Jerry Carkeek rides from post 8.

Canterbury: 'Flying' faces pressure

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Nine older runners were entered in the $40,000 Brooks Fields Stakes, a race named in honor of Canterbury's founder.

The Brooks Fields - a turf race scheduled for 7 1/2 furlongs - will feature Flying Supercon, recent winner of the Honor the Hero Stakes. Flying Supercon has a pace-pressing style and will be making his first attempt around two turns. It appears he will have some company early in the race from Vito Corleone and last year's Minnesota-bred horse of the year, J. P. Jet.
