Iwoodificould just might

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Iwoodificould, who has won his last two starts, should be well-backed to extend his streak in Wednesday's wide-open Woodbine feature, a $100,000 optional claimer for 3-year-olds and up.

The 1 1/16-mile race lured four others - Florida Recount, Bronze Bayou, Davids Expectation, and Tempered Appeal.

Iwoodificould, owned by John Franks, landed a $20,000 claimer Dec. 4 at Sam Houston. He narrowly lost a third-level allowance three weeks later, then won at that condition Jan. 10.

Finally, chance to try turf

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The logjam of stakes horses denied turf racing opportunities by the soggy weather breaks slightly Wednesday afternoon in the featured $50,000 money allowance race at 1 1/16 miles on grass.

The field of nine includes several horses who were entered for the Red Bank and Oceanport handicaps and remained in the barn when those races shifted to the main track.

This marks the fourth time this meet that trainer Phil Oliver has entered the Irish-bred Autonomy. He hopes the 6-year-old finally gets to run here.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - One was born during the Truman administration, the other is still in high school. The 56-year-old Earlie Fires and 16-year-old Tim Thornton practice the same profession, riding racehorses, and it was a good weekend for both of them.

Thornton, a 10-pound apprentice who launched his riding career this month, won his first race Friday, guiding the 30-1 shot Saturday Sin to a three-length victory in the fourth race.

Kabel choses between Mobil and Wando

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Jockey Todd Kabel's choice is Mobil.

Kabel has ridden both Mobil and Wando in each of their starts this year, and the two stablemates will be the first and second choices here in Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate.

Mike Keogh, who trains Mobil and Wando, both sons of Langfuhr, for owner-breeder Gustav Schickedanz, always has maintained that the final decision as to which colt to ride would be Kabel's alone.

And on Monday morning, after guiding Mobil through a six-furlong drill in 1:12.60 on the fast main track, Kabel finally went on the record.
