LINCOLN, Neb. - Owner-trainer Herb Riecken has always had a tremendous amount of success in stakes at State Fair Park. On Sunday, Riecken picked up his first win in the six-furlong President's Cup Handicap with Buzz Bar, an 8-year-old who had not raced in over 14 months.

River Downs track report

Cat Singer, who as a 2-year-old last year won at first asking by 11 lengths at River Downs, made a successful return to River on Tuesday, winning a nonwinners-of-three allowance for Ohio-breds by 2 1/2 lengths. The victory was the third in six career starts for Cat Singer, and came on the heels of a third-place finish in the Checkered Flag Stakes at Indiana Downs on May 26.

In addition to his perfect record at River Downs, Cat Singer has been competitive in allowance company at Mountaineer and Keeneland.

Private City joins derby fray

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - A surprise entry and a defection kept the field for Saturday's Grade 2, $300,000 Ohio Derby at seven Wednesday when post positions were drawn.

Private City, owned by the Bohemia Stable and trained by Allen Jerkens, was not expected for the 1 1/8-mile race but his entry was gladly accepted by director of racing Bill Couch. El Ruller, who has been stakes placed at Woodbine in his last two starts, was expected for the race but was not entered.

Trial the key Plate prep

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The three most recent runnings of the $1 million Queen's Plate, North America's oldest continuously run stakes race, have yielded some unconventional results.

Scatter the Gold, a blue-blooded Sam-Son Farm runner, won the 2000 Plate as a maiden, and his full sister Dancethruthedawn became the 33rd filly to win the race in 2001. Last year, T J's Lucky Moon returned the second highest price in the race's 143-year history ($166) when he prevailed after having won his maiden in his previous start.

There's no doubt: Fogelsonger belongs

Ryan Fogelsonger has won five stakes races on Cherokee's Boy, including the Federico Tesio.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Ryan Fogelsonger has always delivered.

After graduating high school, it was pizzas. Now, at 22, he's the dominant rider in Maryland, delivering winner after winner.

Friday night at Lone Star Park, Fogelsonger will try to prove he can win against some of the nation's most accomplished riders when he makes his first appearance in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association All-Star Jockey Championship.

Touch of the Blues touches down

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Touch of the Blues, who was third last out in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile for trainer Neil Drysdale, flew into Lone Star Park on Tuesday for the $250,000 Dallas Turf Cup.

The 1 1/8-mile race, to be run here Saturday, will serve as the third leg of an NTRA Summer Pick Three that will be televised on CBS from 5-6 p.m. Eastern. The other two legs of the pick three are the Ogden Phipps at Belmont Park and the Ohio Derby at Thistledown.

'Take Achance' comes home

CHICAGO - Sometime late Wednesday a truck and trailer moving west will cross the Illinois state line and bring a horse named Take Achance on Me home for the first time in a long time.

He has not come to smell the pastures of his youth, to snort at old relatives. He has come because his connections want to earn the winner's share of a $75,000-added purse Saturday at Arlington Park.

Claimers go after big purse

AUBURN, Wash. - Primadonna Poppy heads a field of six older fillies and mares in Thursday's featured seventh race at Emerald Downs, a $3,200 starter allowance at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Thursday's feature is part of the Stanislaw Ashbaugh Series, which spotlights the lower-level claiming horses who help to fill the bulk of the programs at most tracks, and it will offer an enhanced purse of $7,000.

Handle dips, Welch wins another title

CALGARY, Alberta - Total handle for the 2003 Stampede Park meeting was $10,622,399, down 9.2 percent from the corresponding meet last year, while daily average handle was $272,369, down 2.2 percent.

The cancellation of four cards due to inclement weather resulted in just 39 racing days this spring, compared to the 42 offered in 2002.

Quincy Welch defended his riding title despite missing the first month of action due to suspension, winning 15 races in the final five days of racing to sweep by Dave Wilson for the crown.

Best Minister sizzles in workout under Santos

ELMONT, N.Y. - While Funny Cide gets a little freshening after the Triple Crown grind, his regular jockey Jose Santos on Tuesday took another 3-year-old out for a spin, guiding Best Minister through a five-furlong workout in 59.45 seconds over a fast Belmont Park main track.

Santos will ride Best Minister in the Grade 2, $150,000 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont on July 6. Tuesday's move was the fastest of 44 works at the distance.
