Catalano deals with lull

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - When trainer Wayne Catalano gets rolling, he makes winning horse races look easy.

Class-droppers, turf horses, claimers, and 2-year-olds - Catalano's stable will go through a month-long cycle at Arlington winning everything in sight. So when Catalano hits a dry spell - it's inevitable - a blip can quickly feel like a drought. And as of Wednesday, Catalano and his owner, Frank Calabrese, had lost 18 straight races. Before the string of losers, they had been winning at about a 40-percent clip, making this fallow period seemingly last forever.

Button Wood takes Plate flyer

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Michael Doyle has enjoyed some success in big races as the underdog. The Doyle-trained Wild Gale finished third in both the 1993 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes.

Doyle finds himself cast in a similar role here Sunday, when he saddles the relatively unheralded Button Wood in the $1 million Queen's Plate at 1 1/4 miles.

"He just gets better all the time, it seems," said Doyle. "He's very consistent. He tries hard."

Kalfaari still the king after Free Press win

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The status quo remained relatively intact in stakes here over the last two weeks.

Kalfaari picked up where he left off last Sunday, winning his sixth in a row in the $35,000 Free Press and, in his usual fashion, making it look closer than it was.

Owned and trained by Clint Willson, the 6-year-old Kalfaari forced the pace outside Wondrous Zeal, shook that rival in early stretch, and was immediately taken on by Deputy Country to his outside. Deputy Country gave it all he had down the lane, but Kalfaari had that old familiar look in his eyes.
