Prairie Meadows: Chindi wins second Sprint

ALTOONA, Iowa - Chindi ($11.80) rallied from last in the seven-horse field with a quarter of a mile to run and caught pacesetter Private Horde in the final stride to become the first two-time winner of the $125,000 Iowa Sprint Handicap at Prairie Meadows.

Chindi, a 9-year-old gelding who captured his first Iowa Sprint in 1998, rated at the back of the pack under jockey Tim Doocy through a contested half-mile run in 44.63 seconds. No doubts about him now

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Mike Keogh stuck to his guns and kept Wando and Mobil, the 3-year-old sons of Langfuhr whom he trains for owner and breeder Gustav Schickedanz, on separate paths to last Sunday's $1 million Queen's Plate.

Now the twain have met, and when the dust had cleared the result was not necessarily what some may have anticipated, with the obvious exception of those who jumped on Wando late to make him the unexpected favorite over his stablemate.

This family act has a slight twist

PLEASANTON, Calif. - One of the many qualities about the northern California summer fair circuit is not simply returning to racing's roots but it's also the chance for many trainers to run at home.

That hometown factor is often a piece of the puzzle for handicappers to include as they look for a winner in a race.

Nowhere on the fair circuit is the hometown edge more prevalent than at the Alameda County Fair. A number of trainers stable at the fairgrounds year-round, and many more were either raised in the area or live here now.

Wando scores a blowout in Queen's Plate

Michael Burns
Patrick Husbands pumps his fist in victory aboard Wando after romping to a nine-length win in the 144th Queen's Plate at Woodbine on Sunday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Favored Wando went right to the front and never looked back to win the 144th running of the $1 million with authority at Woodbine Sunday.

Second-place finisher Mobil gave owner Gustav Schickedanz and trainer Mike Keogh a sweep of the first two positions in the 1 1/4-mile event for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds. The two were separate betting interests, because there are no couplings in stakes worth $100,000 or more at Woodbine.
