Gimmeawink takes Nick Shuk

A change in tactics made a big difference for Gimmeawink in Monday's $75,000 Nick Shuk Memorial Stakes at Delaware Park.

Sent to the front by jockey Rodrigo Madrigal Jr., Gimmeawink ($21.20), the longest shot in a field of six 3-year-olds, went wire to wire in the 1 1/16-mile stakes to defeat 1-2 favorite Cherokee's Boy by 1 3/4 lengths.

Madrigal, who had ridden Gimmeawink when he finished second and fifth in a pair of two-turn stakes at Delaware, said trainer Tim Ritchey suggested the colt would run better if asked for more early speed.

Stewards mum on 'Mystery' snafu

CHICAGO - The Prairie State Festival of Racing on Saturday at Arlington began well enough for the trainer Chris Block, who won the first of six statebred stakes races with the 3-year-old filly Keeping the Gold.

Supposedly, the best was yet to come for Block, who had the 2002 Illinois Horse of the Year, Mystery Giver, readied for the Cardinal Handicap, which Mystery Giver won last season. But before Mystery Giver got to the racetrack, his day began falling apart.

River Downs: Two-surface feat for Devil Time

Devil Time achieved a rare feat in winning the $50,000 Sydney Gendelman Handicap for Ohio-breds for the second consecutive year.

Originally scheduled for the turf, the Gendelman was switched to the dirt after a water-line break drenched parts of the turf course, making it unusable. Thus, Devil Time has won the same stakes on both turf and dirt.

Under a ground-saving ride by Bill Trolio, Devil Time ($4.20) drew off convincingly in the stretch to register a 4 1/4-length victory. Vivid Views was second, two lengths clear of Taylortwofeathers.

Delaware: Jaramar Rain mops up

Jaramar Rain ($6) found easier pickings for the same purse money when she scratched out of Saturday's Obeah Handicap to run 24 hours later in the $100,000 New Castle Handicap at Delaware Park.

Eight of the fillies and mares from the original field scratched when the 1 1/8-mile New Castle was moved from the turf to the main track, leaving Jaramar Rain to face just three opponents. Ridden by Rodrigo Madrigal Jr. for trainer Rusty Arnold, Jaramar Rain romped to a five-length win over Alternate, the 3-5 favorite.

Calder: Hear No Evil all alone

MIAMI - Hear No Evil ($4.20) set all the pace en route to an easy three-length victory over Whos Crying Now and four other 3-year-olds in the $100,000 Unbridled Stakes at Calder.

The Name's Bond, who had easily defeated Hear No Evil when the pair met four weeks earlier, would have been favored but was a late scratch due to what was reported to be a minor injury.

Delaware: Devon Rose headed to Del Cap

Owner Richard Englander and trainer Allen Iwinski were on the fence about whether Devon Rose was worthy of running in next month's $750,000 Delaware Handicap. Their decision became a no-brainer when Devon Rose ($3.20) cruised to a 4 1/2-length win in the $100,000 Obeah Handicap at Delaware Park.

"As soon as she crossed the finish line I called Rick and the first words out of his mouth were 'Delaware Handicap,' " Iwinski said. "I think she has certainly earned the opportunity."
