Trick is catching Badge of Silver

There are a half-dozen horses in Monday's General George Handicap at Laurel Park capable of running within six or seven points of the 113 Beyer Speed Figure that Badge of Silver earned in his first start in more than 10 months.

None of them, however, possesses the kind of early speed Badge of Silver can generate. So unless Badge of Silver gets tired going a furlong farther than he ran three weeks ago at Fair Grounds, he might be uncatchable in the Grade 2, $200,000 General George at seven furlongs.

A dozen in for the long haul

ARCADIA, Calif. - Monday's $200,000 San Luis Obispo Handicap at Santa Anita has attracted 12 entrants, including 2003 major stakes winners .

Those two are far from being standouts, though, in the Grade 2 race over 1 1/2 miles on turf.

Four pounds separate the entrants in the handicap, with Continuously carrying high weight of 116 pounds. Trained by Bobby Frankel, Continuously is the likely favorite, but bettors will have plenty of alternatives.

Burning Roma holds on

OLDSMAR Fla. - Burning Roma stalked a blistering early pace, forged to the front out of the final turn, then held off a strong late challenge from favored Remind to hit the wire with a neck to spare for his second straight victory in the Tampa Bay Downs Breeders' Cup Stakes.

Under jockey Jesus Castanon, Burning Roma was content to sit behind the first flight as a three-horse speed duel produced an opening half-mile in 46.13 seconds and a six-furlong clocking of 1:10.27 over a course that was listed as firm but a bit wet from afternoon showers.

Madcap Escapade roars in by double digits

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - On a card designed to showcase south Florida's top 3-year-old colts, it was a 3-year-old filly that arguably turned in the top performance of the afternoon.
