Clear sailing for Ten Most Wanted

Four-Footed Fotos
Ten Most Wanted, under David Flores, is much the best in the NJC Handicap.

STICKNEY, Ill. - Ten Most Wanted will not win a medal for toying with five overmatched opponents Saturday in the at Hawthorne Race Course. At least he made it around the first turn this time. At least he reminded racing fans what an overpowering horse he is when things go his way.

Water Cannon wears down Pawyne Princess in Tesio

Jim McCue
Water Cannon (left) chases Pawyne Princess for more than a mile to win Saturday's Federico Tesio Stakes at Pimlico.

After chasing the speedy filly Pawyne Princess for more than a mile, Water Cannon looked like a beaten horse with less than a furlong remaining in Saturday's $100,000 for 3-year-olds at Pimlico. But as Pawyne Princess, a slight favorite at 6-5, grew leg weary inside the sixteenth pole, Water Cannon erased a two-length deficit and got up by a neck to record his fifth consecutive victory.

Saltwater Runner wins the $50,000 Goldfinch Stakes at Prairie Meadows on Friday.

Saltwater Runner saved ground tracking the pace to the stretch and rallied for a one-length victory over Miss Elsie in Friday's $50,000 Goldfinch Stakes, the opening night feature at Prairie Meadows.

Saltwater Runner ($4.60) briefly waited for racing room approaching the stretch before jockey Tim Doocy, who scored four wins on the nine-race program, angled the 3-year-old daughter of Salt Lake to the three path for clear sailing in upper stretch. Saltwater Runner hit the front leaving the furlong marker and inched clear at the wire while covering the six furlongs in 1.09:66.

Cosme's career on the rise

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Emmanuel Cosme, the leading apprentice jockey at Tampa Bay Downs, would like nothing better than to follow in the footsteps of Willie Martinez and Manny Cruz and use a strong meeting here to launch a successful career.

Through April 16, Cruz has won 36 races. And while he has no chance of winning the riding title as Martinez did in 1991-92 (123 wins) and Cruz did in 2001-02 (91), he is a shoo-in to be leading apprentice here and will finish in the top 10 in the standings.

World record equaled at Emerald

AUBURN, Wash. - Willie the Cat turned in a world record-equaling performance in Friday's opening day allowance feature at Emerald Downs, blazing 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:01.20 to win off by nearly eight lengths.

The clocking bettered Emerald's track record of 1:01.40 set by Salt Grinder in 2002 and tied the world mark established by Silvey's Image in 1992 and equaled by Plenty Zloty in 1995. Both of those times were registered at Turf Paradise.

Leading the way, but falling behind

Lone Star Park
The Post Time Pavilion is one of several first-class facilities that draw patrons to Lone Star. Despite such successes, the track's attendance and handle have steadily fallen.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Jeff Greco, the general manager of Lone Star Park, knows many of the track's best customers by name. On a recent weekday stroll through the Las Vegas-style race book adjacent to the grandstand, Greco shook hands and proudly said: "This has to be the finest simulcast facility in all of racing."

It's hard to argue.

Meteor Storm solid as a rock

ARCADIA, Calif. - Meteor Storm's tenuous grip on the turf division is at risk Sunday in the Grade 2 San Juan Capistrano Invitational Handicap. Nine older horses entered the 1 3/4-mile turf race, the traditional Santa Anita winter-spring meet closing-day feature.

Leadership has wavered across nearly every division since last December, and even if wins his second straight stakes Sunday, the long-distance turf division will remain unsettled. It has been that kind of meet - 84 days of racing in which much is unresolved.
