Twice as Bad takes Laz Barrera

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - A three-length win by Twice as Bad in Saturday's $150,000 gave owner Ernie Moody and trainer Vladimir Cerin an opportunity to remember how ill the colt was when he arrived in California in January.

"He wasn't much to look at in the first few weeks,' Moody said.

"He seems to have recovered," Cerin said.

Azeri, Funny Cide meet in deep Met

ELMONT, N.Y. - Before Smarty Jones, Azeri and Funny Cide were the most popular horses of the last several years. Monday, five days before Smarty Jones goes for the Triple Crown, Azeri and Funny Cide meet in a sterling 111th renewal of the Grade 1, $750,000 at Belmont Park.

For Azeri, the 2002 Horse of the Year and two-time champion older mare, the Met marks her first time facing males. For Funny Cide, the Met is his first start at Belmont Park since Empire Maker foiled his Triple Crown bid in last year's Belmont Stakes.

Grand Heritage fits in derby

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The Grade 3, $100,000 Jersey Derby attracted a competitive field of nine to headline the Memorial Day card at Monmouth Park.

is a possible favorite in the race for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

Trained by Bill Mott, Grand Heritage has already won three times on the grass, including the Continental Mile last year at Monmouth. He contested the pace in his last race, the Grade 3 American Turf Stakes at Churchill Downs, before fading to seventh. Julian Pimentel has the mount.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Laura de Seroux went looking for a suitable spot for her turf standout Ballingarry, and the result was not necessarily good for her counterparts at Churchill Downs. arrived here Saturday following the long flight from Southern California to run Monday in the $100,000 Louisville Handicap, a race in which Ballingary most likely will be favored.

Eyes of Texas upon Kela

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Trainer Mike Mitchell is having one of the best years of his career, and it will only get sweeter Monday if Kela completes a sweep of this meet's two richest races in the Grade 3, $300,000 .

The race is one of seven stakes to be run at Lone Star on Monday. Worth a cumulative $1 million, the program is called Lone Star Million Day. Other major stakes on the card include the Grade 3, $200,000 WinStar Distaff, which drew 12 fillies and mares led by Katdogawn, Bedanken and Janeian.

Unbeaten pair will be tested

AUBURN, Wash. - Crimson Design and Pool Boy will put their unbeaten records on the line on Monday when they meet seven other 3-year-olds in the $40,000 Pepsi-Cola Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Crimson Design posted two easy wins at Portland Meadows before extending his streak with a 1 1/2-length victory over Random Memo in this track's six-furlong Auburn Stakes on May 2. Crimson Design, a son of Cisco Road and Crimson Date from the barn of trainer Jim Fergason, figures to go off as the favorite under high weight of 120 pounds.

Wanted: The Buddy Gil of old

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Buddy Gil, the winner of the 2003 Santa Anita Derby, rebounded from a four-race losing streak to win an allowance race at Santa Anita on April 16.

From trainer Jeff Mullins's perspective, the victory may have jump-started Buddy Gil's career.

"I think those losses kind of broke his heart and he needed something to pick his head up," Mullins said.

Mullins's theory will be tested when Buddy Gil starts as the favorite in Monday's $75,000 Ack Ack Handicap over 7 1/2 furlongs at Hollywood Park.
