Pesci tries to live up to hype

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Pesci has received ample hype since her career began last fall.

Part of that is because of her celebrity owner, actor Joe Pesci, and part is because she won her first two starts by a combined 13 1/2 lengths. Since then, Pesci has lost two stakes but rebounded to win an allowance race.

Sunday, Pesci will attempt to win her first stakes in the $100,000 Hawthorne Handicap at Hollywood Park. Trainer and co-owner Wesley Ward says he hopes the Hawthorne will lead to a start in the $300,000 Molly Pitcher Breeders' Cup Handicap at Monmouth Park on July 4.

Bella Banissa tries stakes again

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - After Bella Banissa finished second in the Nursery Stakes in her debut May 16, trainer David Hofmans said she was likely to reappear in a maiden race before trying another stakes.

Those plans were altered when Hofmans and owner Pete Parrella saw the nominations for Sunday's $75,000 Cinderella Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. Without Nursery winner Double D Appeal in the field - Double D Appeal may start in the Landaluce Stakes in July, trainer Jeff Bonde said - the Cinderella lacks a standout.

Home Court on a mission

CHICAGO - The filly Home Court could run for more money in a second-level allowance race at her home track - Churchill Downs - than she does Sunday at Arlington Park in the $38,000 Ribbon Stakes. But Home Court's connections are willing to sacrifice the purse money for a stakes win, even of the minor variety.

B.B. Best looks like the real deal

MIAMI - Trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. has had his share of good horses and fast 2-year-olds over the years. But none has been any more precocious or any quicker than B.B. Best, the odds-on favorite in Sunday's $40,000 Wynn Dot Comma Stakes at Calder.

B.B. Best, a son of champion sprinter Yes It's True, was bet to 3-5 for his debut May 22 and ran to that backing, winning off by 14 3/4 lengths. His final time of 59.37 seconds for five furlongs earned him an 87 Beyer Speed Figure.
