Island Sand wins the Acorn by 1 3/4 lengths at Belmont Park on Friday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - It's a good thing trainer Larry Jones didn't put off his New York debut until the Mother Goose. He would have missed out on his first Grade 1 win.

Jones had thought about using the Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs for Island Sand as a prep for the Mother Goose Stakes here on June 26. But when Madcap Escapade and Ashado defected from the field, Jones decided to ship Island Sand to New York for Friday's $250,000 .

Artie Schiller vs. Timo, again

ELMONT, N.Y. - If Artie Schiller were a dirt horse, jockey Richard Migliore might be thinking he was riding a Triple Crown winner.

"He gives me a feeling very few horses have given me," Migliore said. "His turn of foot is so explosive, he can put it in another gear."

That explosiveness is on the turf, where in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park.

With rain in the forecast for Saturday, four horses were entered as main-track-only entrants, including Master David, who was expected to run in Saturday's Belmont Stakes.

War Trace ready to blossom

ELMONT, N.Y. - Now that he's on the right surface and has a little more experience, don't be surprised if War Trace has a coming-out party in Sunday's Grade 3, $100,000 Hill Prince Stakes at Belmont Park.

War Trace is a son of Storm Cat out of Memories of Silver, a multiple graded stakes winner on turf. After two failed attempts on dirt, War Trace has won two of three starts on turf. His lone loss came in the Forerunner Handicap at Keeneland, where he finished seventh of eight starters.
