Shiny Prize gets her chance

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Even if Shiny Prize were to win the feature race by an absurd number of lengths Wednesday at Churchill Downs, she probably would not be able to top the thrills that her little brother gave to Fred and William "Buff" Bradley and their families last weekend.

Funny Cide fit for Mass Cap

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - A field of six to nine horses led by Funny Cide is expected to be entered on Wednesday for the Grade 2, $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap on Saturday at Suffolk Downs

Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, worked out Sunday at Belmont Park, going five furlongs in 59.80 seconds under exercise rider and assistant trainer Robin Smullen.

"The work was good," said Funny Cide's trainer, Barclay Tagg. "I guess he's ready. He's fit and doing fine."

Silvera seeks repeat victory

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Laurie Silvera will try to win the Bold Ruckus Stakes for the second year in a row Wednesday at Woodbine, when he sends out Stately Clock in the six-furlong turf race. Eight other Ontario-sired 3-year-olds were entered in the $134,875 event.

Stately Clock has made all six of his starts on the main track for owner and breeder Silverbrook Stable. He graduated his second time out, in a seven-furlong maiden special, but was a disappointing sixth in his final 2-year-old outing, the restricted Kingarvie Stakes.

Two paths to victory on weekend

CALGARY, Alberta - The two stakes races run at Stampede Park last weekend presented a study in contrasts.

On Saturday, Raylene captured the Duchess of York over a fast surface and under a confident ride from Rickey Walcott as the public choice in a three-horse field.

Sunday, Bubblegum Kid scored an improbable upset in the Herald Gold Plate over a course rated as good but which changed hourly under overcast conditions.

Walcott moved Raylene at the three-eighths pole to engage the pacesetting duo of Northern Neechitoo and A Shaky Start.

Lone Star: Sweep for Asmussen

Trainer Steve Asmussen swept both divisions of the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity, winning the colts and geldings with Expect Will and the fillies with Berdelia.

Expect Will gave Asmussen his first win in the $118,570 colts and geldings division when he was up for a nose victory in the race for 2-year-olds. He was one of six horses in the field trained by Asmussen. A seventh horse from the Asmussen barn, Robbeau, was scratched.

Expect Wings finished second in the race, a half-length in front of third-place finisher Leaving on My Mind.

Belmont: Prado lands on a winner

ELMONT, N.Y. - Edgar Prado showed little rust from being out of the saddle for a week as he guided Mambo Slew through traffic in the stretch to run down favored Lucifer's Stone and win the Grade 3, $114,800 Sands Point Handicap by a neck at Belmont Park. It was 1 3/4 lengths back to Vous in third.

Prado, who picked up the mount on Mambo Slew when Mike Smith missed a flight from Southern California, rode three winners on the card, his first day back since winning the Belmont Stakes aboard Birdstone on June 5. Prado began serving a seven-day careless riding suspension on June 6.

Dorris battling back

CHICAGO - Tom Dorris has been training racehorses 30 years, and never has he gone through a slump like the one that closed in around his stable this spring. The losing was relentless, going on through the entire Hawthorne meet, and on into Arlington. Dorris, typically a 15-percent winner, has gone 8 for 120 in 2004, and that includes a recent upturn at the Arlington meet, where he has won 3 of 28. Even now, luck's wind has not gotten fully behind him - to go with the trio of Arlington winners are seven second-place finishes.

Pointer aiming high with Megantic

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Norman Pointer will swing for the fences with Megantic.

Flush with victory in Saturday's $60,000 Battlefield Stakes at Monmouth Park, the trainer will aim the former claimer toward the Grade 1, $750,000 United Nations Handicap, Monmouth's premier turf stakes, on July 3.

"I'm going," Pointer said. "When you've got a loaded gun, you've got to shoot it. When a horse is good, anything can happen."

Megantic impressively turned the corner this season. Running Horse Farms claimed Megantic from Bill Mott in March 2003 for $62,500 at Gulfstream Park.

Plate possible for 'Sphynx'

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - There's no question that Eye of the Sphynx was the star of the present after she ran her undefeated streak to four in Sunday's $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks.

But much of the postrace focus concerned Eye of the Sphynx's future. Specifically, would she run back against males in the $1 million Queen's Plate at 1 1/4 miles here on June 27?
