Sightseek finds her old spark

Sightseek, Jerry Bailey aboard, runs and hides from her three foes in the Ogden Phipps Handicap on Saturday at Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. - In a race that could signal a changing of the guard in the filly and mare division, Sightseek put away Azeri leaving the three-furlong pole and drew off to an easy 3 1/4-length victory over Storm Flag Flying in the Grade 1, $300,000 before 7,498 at Belmont Park.

It was 6 1/2 lengths back to Passing Shot, and another two lengths back to Azeri, the two time defending division champion, who finished last as the 4-5 favorite after setting the early pace.

Red-hot Bejarano wins on Champali

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Rafael Bejarano has been the runaway leader atop the North American jockey standings since early this year, but until June 12, he never had won a graded stakes in his nearly two years of riding in the United States.

But after guiding Champali to a 3 1/4-length triumph Saturday in the Grade 3 at Churchill Downs, Bejarano had collected three graded stakes wins in an eight-day period. He also won the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap and Grade 3 Northern Dancer Stakes the previous Saturday.

Turf debut a breeze for 'Frisky'

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Frisky Spider made two important points with his victory Saturday in the $60,000 Restoration Stakes at Monmouth Park.

A son of Frisk Me Now, Frisky Spider proved he could handle the turf in his grass debut and showed he was more than a headstrong sprinter by winning the one-mile contest for 3-year-olds.

Frisky Spider ($11.40) also showed the ability to cover ground very quickly, making all the pace to finish in 1:33.95 over the firm course.

'Maysville' a millionaire

Maysville Slew wins the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup by a neck at Lone Star Park on Saturday.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Maysville Slew became a millionaire on Saturday when he ran down Star Over the Bay in the late stages for a neck win in the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup at Lone Star Park. Star Over the Bay finished second, 1 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher A to the Z.

Maysville Slew ($45.20) raced well back in the early stages, while Waupauca set fractions of 24.02 for the opening quarter and 47.70 seconds for the half-mile mark. Star Over the Bay tracked that one closely in second, overtook him midway on the turn for home, then shook off a bid from Warleigh.

Woodbine: Slew Valley rallies late

Slew Valley records a mild upset in the Grade 2, $324,300 King Edward Breeders' Cup Handicap at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Slew Valley ($10.60) wore down Shoal Water in deep stretch to record a mild upset in the Grade 2, $324,300 .

Wando, Canada's Horse of the Year in 2003, came up flat as the 3-5 favorite in the nine-furlong turf event, finishing fourth after setting the pace.

Shoal Water pressed Wando along the inside all the way and went by him inside the eighth pole, but Slew Valley came on in the final sixteenth to prevail by a neck.

MIAMI, Fla. - Mister Fotis wasn't expected to set the pace in Saturday's $100,000 Unbridled Stakes at Calder. But once he got loose on the lead, he was not about to relinquish his advantage, splashing to a one-length victory over Nightmare Affair in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-olds.

Delaware: Hopelessly Devoted by 4

Hopelessly Devoted angled off the rail on the second turn, spurted from third to first, and drew off smartly to win the $175,000 Susan's Girl Breeders' Cup for 3-year-old fillies at Delaware Park.

Sent off as the fifth choice in the field of eight, Hopelessly Devoted ran the 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.90 under and paid $15.40 to win, $7 to place, and $6.80 to show. The place and show mutuels were high, partly because Pawyne Princess, the 8-5 favorite was rushed to the lead, set the pace for six furlongs, and stopped, finishing last.

Thistledown: Golden Tour holds on

NORTH RANDALL, Ohio - Golden Tour broke sharply from her rail post position to make the lead, set all the pace while being cleverly rated by veteran jockey Tommy Meyers, and dug in gamely to prevail by a head over the rallying Oh So Easy in the 10th running of the $45,000, 1 1/16-mile Merry Time Stakes.

It was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third to Whitewater Way.

Ashwood C C, the 3-5 favorite, faded to be fourth after drawing on even terms for the lead with Golden Tour at the quarter pole.
