Southern Image out of Gold Cup

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Southern Image, one of the nation's top older horses, will miss the Hollywood Gold Cup on July 10 because of a tender left front foot, trainer Mike Machowsky said on Sunday.

Southern Image was scheduled to have a workout on Sunday but Machowsky canceled it when the 4-year-old colt appeared to be favoring the foot before he went to the track.

"He was a touch off on it," Machowsky said. "Our normal routine is to walk for 10 minutes before a workout. I had him jogged up and down the road, and we didn't want to take any chances.

Niigon, 'Gold' head for second leg

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - A Bit O'Gold may have been outshone by Niigon, but he lost little luster when finishing a strong second in the Queen's Plate.

"He'll be back," said jockey Jono Jones of A Bit O'Gold. "We got beat, that's all. The winner had a better trip this time than he had in the Plate Trial."

Niigon ran second to A Bit O'Gold here in the June 6 Plate Trial.

Both Jones and trainer Catherine Day Phillips are looking forward to the rubber match, which should take place in the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie on July 18.

Repeat win will require extra effort

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Brass in Pocket will try to win the $127,875 Ballade Stakes for the second year in a row Wednesday at Woodbine, but the rapid 3-year-old Blonde Executive will likely be favored in the six-furlong test for Ontario-sired fillies and mares.

Brass in Pocket was the Sovereign Award runner-up for champion older female in Canada in 2003, when she won five stakes in seven starts. She has seemingly lost a step or two this year, although both of her efforts at the meeting were decent.

Testament to country life

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Niigon hadn't set foot on the Woodbine grounds since finishing second in the Plate Trial three weeks earlier.

But Niigon evidently liked what he felt, and saw, here last Sunday as he earned his first stakes win in the $1 million Queen's Plate.

The Queen's Plate also represented a career highlight for jockey Robert Landry, who was competing in his 13th straight Plate and 14th overall, and owners Chiefswood Stable and trainer Eric Coatrieux, who were competing in their first.

Top trainers make Martin even better

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Jockey Eddie Martin Jr. says he has the best of three worlds at Lone Star Park, where he has dominated the standings for much of the meet, which will come to a close July 11.

"I'm fortunate to ride for the big three," said Martin, referring to trainers Steve Asmussen, Cole Norman, and Bret Calhoun, the top three trainers at Lone Star. "To ride for the three powerhouse stables, you pretty much have to have a good meet. Those are three people who know how to win races."

Demesme spill stuff of legends

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Jockey Elliott Demesme's world turned upside down in a matter of three or four strides Friday at the San Joaquin County Fair in Stockton.

Demesme rode Coeur Defeu to victory in an Arabian race, but his mount appeared to take a bad step just as he hit the finish line. As Demesme was pulling up his mount, Coeur Defeu tripped, pitching Demesme over his head.

Belmont: Broadway Gold captures Astoria

ELMONT, N.Y. - Her pedigree suggests that Broadway Gold will excel going a route of ground. If that holds true, her connections will have plenty to look forward to the remainder of the year.

Broadway Gold, a daughter of Seeking the Gold, made it 2 for 2 on Sunday, blowing past the previously unbeaten Chocolate Brown turning for home en route to a three-length victory in the $107,700 Astoria Stakes for juvenile fillies. Lady Glade rallied from last to be second, 2 1/4 lengths ahead of the maiden Comacina.
