Thompson breaks leg in accident

Jockey Terry Thompson broke his right leg in a three-horse spill in Tuesday's second race at Prairie Meadows.

The incident occurred when pacesetter Soriano Cat, with jockey Kelly Murray aboard, broke down entering the turn of six-furlong race.

Thompson and his mount, Brilliant Beau, fell over the top of Soriano Cat, sending Thompson to the ground. Precocious Builder and jockey R.D. Williams were unable to avoid the fallen horses and also went down, with Precocious Builder appearing to clip Thompson as he fell.

Hot pace looks good for 'Lana'

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Pace may be the deciding factor in Thursday's feature race at the Alameda County Fair, a six-furlong, first-level allowance for 3-year-old fillies.

Four of the six runners can run the opening half-mile in 44 seconds and change, which, on the surface, seems to set things up for an off-the-pace runner.

Tequila Lana will likely be last early and could be in front at the wire if a heated pace battle erupts.

But as her trainer Howard Belvoir points out, "Everybody reads the Form. If there's that much speed, somebody may take off the pace."

U.N. provides stiff class test for In Hand

OCEANPORT, N.J. - In Hand will be looking for a lively pace in the Grade 1, $750,000 United Nations Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park.

In Hand, trained by Phil Oliver, is a drop-back closer who does his best running in the lane. He has won two of his last three races and showed a big rally even in the defeat. In Hand rallied from 13 lengths off the pace to miss by only a neck in an allowance race at Keeneland.

He should love the U.N. distance - 1 3/8 miles on the turf - but he might not care for the competition.
