Sweet Problem finds rare spot

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Having a top-class American-bred 3-year-old filly can be frustrating around these parts, with stakes opportunities for them being limited.

But the problem can be easier to accept when you have a filly as talented as Sweet Problem, a Kentucky-bred who is slated to run for trainer Lorne Richards and owner K.K. Sangara here in Saturday's $100,000 Hill 'n' Dale Stakes.

Sweet Problem won her maiden in her third start here last September and was claimed for $50,000 that day by Richards and Sangara.

Allourwishes class of Harrison 'Cap

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Allourwishes headlines a competitive field of six 3-year old fillies in Friday's $5,000 Captain Stanley Harrison Handicap. The only stakes winner in the field, Allourwishes, should be well bet.

The Captain Stanley Harrison, run at six furlongs, also includes two fillies who won their maidens this spring at Stampede Park - Danzig Ballerina and D J's Runnaway. That fact alone should make them major players here.

Forego and Suburban forever

ELMONT, N.Y. - In many ways the Suburban Handicap, which will be run Saturday at Belmont Park for the 118th time, was a race that defined the great Forego's career.

The legendary gelding, who died on Aug. 27, 1997, raced in the Grade 1 Suburban five consecutive years, more than in any other race in his 57 starts. He won the Suburban in 1975, finished second in 1976 and 1977 and third in 1974. He ended his career at the age of 7 in the 1978 Suburban by beating only one horse, in one of his few off-the-board performances.

Binya looks to rebound in New York Handicap

ELMONT, N.Y - Binya, who hasn't run since finishing third as the favorite in the Grade 3 Bewitch at Keeneland in April, will be back in action in Monday's $250,000 New York Handicap.

Kiaran McLaughlin, who trains Binya for Joe Allen, is very high on the 5-year-old grass mare. As a 3-year-old, Binya raced in France and was a listed stakes winner in sprints. Allen privately purchased the German-bred filly and brought her to the United States. While under trainer Christophe Clement's care for much of last year, Binya did not race.

Savoy Special has shot if he handles gate

ELMONT, N.Y. - To say that Savoy Special has some issues with the starting gate is an understatement.

Last year at Saratoga, Savoy Special acted so badly in the gate he ended up being scratched and needed 30 stitches to mend a frightful-looking gash on his leg. On May 16 at Belmont Park, in what was supposed to be Savoy Special's first race since finishing third in the Grade 3 Fall Highweight in November, he was a late scratch when he became fractious in the gate.

Dynever prefers no rain

ELMONT, N.Y. - Few horses have accumulated more frequent-flier mileage than Dynever, who has made appearances at tracks in eight states from just 12 starts. If trainer Christophe Clement has his druthers, Dynever will not leave New York again until late October when the Breeders' Cup is held at Lone Star Park in Texas.

Carryover or not, pick six is a stumper

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A substantial pick six carryover may or may not be awaiting Churchill Downs horseplayers when they file into the track and its hundreds of offtrack wagering outlets Thursday. But whether or not the bet carried over from Wednesday, at least one thing will remain unchanged: Churchill racing secretary Doug Bredar and his staff made sure the Thursday card was a tough one.

Valenzuela to ride four in his return

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Corey Nakatani entered the week with a seven-win lead in the Hollywood Park jockey standings, but the competition is about to get a lot tougher. Pat Valenzuela returns Thursday from suspension, and if it seems too late for Valenzuela to lead the meet, do not count him out.
