Pa. Derby may be $1M race

Philadelphia Park is considering raising the purse for the Sept. 6 Pennsylvania Derby from $750,000 to $1 million and limiting attendance that day to 35,000 in anticipation of Smarty Jones making his comeback in the race, track officials said on Friday.

Rain washes out Lincoln

The Lincoln State Fair on Friday morning canceled that night's scheduled card because of unsafe track conditions caused by heavy rain. It was the second straight Lincoln card disrupted because of the track condition, after jockeys voted Thursday not to ride after two races.

The Lincoln track was soaked by rain Wednesday, and Thursday's abbreviated card was on a muddy track. Another storm brought more than an inch of rain Friday morning, prompting a meeting of riders, stewards, and track maintenance officials, who decided to cancel.

Swingforthefences steps up campaign

ELMONT, N.Y. - Following his first stakes score in last Friday's $250,000 Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows, Swingforthefences will be pointed to some of the summer's biggest races for 3-year-olds.

Trainer Richard Violette is looking at three races for Swingforthefences's next start: the Grade 3, $600,000 West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer on Aug. 7; the Grade 2, $500,000 Jim Dandy at Saratoga on Aug. 8; or the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell at Monmouth run the same day as the Jim Dandy.

Derby runner-up Lion Heart to Long Branch

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Lion Heart, the pacesetter in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, is expected to top the field for the Grade 3, $100,000 Long Branch Breeders' Cup Stakes at Monmouth Park on July 17. The 1 1/16-mile Long Branch serves as the local prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational on Aug. 8.

Trainer Patrick Biancone said Friday that Lion Heart will ship from Saratoga for the Long Branch the morning of the race. Lion Heart was scheduled to work Thursday at Saratoga, but the breeze was canceled when the track came up sloppy.

Big plans for Colonial Colony

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Colonial Colony, the Churchill Downs-based 6-year-old who was part of a close four-horse finish last weekend in the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park, will run next in the July 31 Washington Park Handicap or the Aug. 7 Whitney Handicap, trainer Walt Bindner Jr. said Friday.

"We're going to lay out the different possibilities in the next couple of days," said Bindner.

Invaders tough to beat in Lassie

SHAKOPEE, Minn. - Four locally based 2-year-old fillies meet two shippers in Sunday's $40,000 Canterbury Park Lassie Stakes. The Lassie and the $40,000 Canterbury Park Juvenile are co-featured on the 11-race card.

Tuff Justice began her career at Prairie Meadows, where she defeated maidens by daylight in her career debut last month. In her next start, the Prairie Gold Lassie Stakes, Tuff Justice was forced to steady at the break and rallied to finish fourth. Trainer John Betts has named Jason Eads to ride.

Shipper to test 'Nicole'

CHICAGO - When the Dare to Dream Stable bought Nicole's Dream about a year ago and turned her over to the trainer Larry Rivelli, they could not have fully realized exactly what they had. Nicole's Dream had been based at Tampa Bay Downs and Great Lakes Downs with the trainer Odin Londono, and shown some zip winning short sprint races on turf and dirt.

McLeod's latest buy looks like a winner

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Steve Bryant wasn't kidding when he said owner Ross McLeod was planning on buying quality horses and racing them at Hastings. McLeod, who is the CEO of Great Canadian Gaming Corp., the parent company of Hastings, was successful with his first purchase, Tobe Suave. McLeod purchased Tobe Suave out of Woodbine and brought him to Hastings, where Tobe Suave won the Burnaby on July 1. His latest buy, 4-year-old filly Hanselina, looks like a good one, as well.

Bullock goes after stakes with 'special' filly

AUBURN, Wash. - If you are looking for a stakes winner in the 2-year-old filly division at Emerald Downs, trainer Steve Bullock's barn is a good place to start.

Bullock has won eight stakes with six different fillies in the division, including three runnings of the Barbara Shinpoch Stakes at a mile, which usually decides the state juvenile filly championship. He has also won two renewals of the six-furlong Angie C. Stakes, with Amocat in 2000 and Calldara in 2002.

For Niigon, it's back to work

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Niigon, in his first serious piece of work since winning the June 27 Queen's Plate, went six furlongs in 1:14 at his home base, his owner's Chiefswood Farm, Friday morning.

The object of the exercise was to keep Niigon in tune for the second leg of the Canadian Triple Crown, next Sunday's $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes over 1 3/16 miles at Fort Erie.

The series for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds concludes here Aug. 8 with the $500,000 Breeders', a 1 1/2-mile turf race. A $500,000 bonus awaits a horse who sweeps the triple.
