Multiplication dies on track of apparent heart attack

Multiplication, who won the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park on June 26, died of an apparent heart attack after breezing at Belmont on Saturday morning.

A New York-bred, Multiplication had completed a six-furlong bullet work in 1:11.56 on the main track and was walking back to the barn when he collapsed on the track. Dr. Celeste Kunz, the chief examining veterinarian at the New York Racing Association, said it appeared Multiplication suffered a massive heart attack.

The Cliff's Edge renews quest

ELMONT, N.Y. - The spring began on a promising note for with his win in the Grade 1 Blue Grass in April, but went downhill from there.

In his first race since finishing fifth in the Kentucky Derby, The Cliff's Edge will look to jump-start his summer campaign in Sunday's $150,000 Dwyer at Belmont Park.

The Cliff's Edge's trainer, Nick Zito, holds a strong hand in the Grade 2 Dwyer. Zito also will run Derby Trial winner Sir Shackleton. The horses are coupled because Zito owns a percentage of The Cliff's Edge with Robert LaPenta.

Angie C. fillies lack experience

AUBURN, Wash. - Eight 2-year-old fillies will vie for divisional leadership in Sunday's six-furlong Angie C. Stakes, the first stakes for the division at the Emerald Downs meeting.

None of Sunday's Angie C. contestants have won more than a maiden race, so much of the attention will likely be focused on the field's two maiden special weight winners, Charming Colleen and Rosieontop.

Deluge hits but racing goes on

Chris's Bad Boy ready for showdown

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Chris's Bad Boy, Woodbine's six-furlong track record holder, will lock horns with the top local 3-year-old sprinter, Twisted Wit, at 6 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's $141,250 Bold Venture Handicap.

Chris's Bad Boy set the track record (1:08.05) when he won the Kennedy Road Stakes in his final 2003 outing. He launched his current campaign with another stakes victory at six furlongs, in the Jacques Cartier.

Hendricks likely paralyzed

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Dan Hendricks has suffered paralysis from the waist down as the result of a spinal cord injury suffered in a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, but intends to resume training when he leaves the hospital, according to his wife, Samantha.

Dan Hendricks, 45, was scheduled to be transported on Friday from a hospital in Riverside County, Calif., to a San Diego-area hospital, where he will undergo surgery in coming days to stabilize his spine.

Surprise Halo out to repeat

PLEASANTON, Calif. - Defending champion Surprise Halo will try to repeat in the Alamedan Handicap on Sunday's closing day at the Alameda County Fair, but he must beat a strong trio from the barn of northern California's leading trainer, Jerry Hollendorfer.

Surprise Halo drew post 3 in the 1 1/16-mile Alamedan, a $50,000 race that drew nine entrants. Hollendorfer trainees Gold Ruckus, Adreamisborn, and Cappuchino drew posts 1, 6, and 9.

Surprise Halo has won both his starts here: a $20,000 claimer in 2001 and the Alamedan last year.

Cajun Beat going from Margolis to Frankel

MIAMI - Cajun Beat, the reigning Breeders' Cup Sprint champion, will be sent from owner Satish Sanan's farm in Ocala, Fla., to trainer Bobby Frankel at Belmont Park to prepare for a defense of his BC Sprint title this fall at Lone Star Park.

Cajun Beat had been trained by Steve Margolis, for whom he won the BC Sprint last year. Margolis shipped the horse to Sanan's farm immediately following his fourth-place finish in the Dubai Golden Shaheen March 27.

Sanan's Padua Stable owns Cajun Beat in partnership with John and Joseph Iracane.
