Saint Liam, Dutrow look ready to roll

Saint Liam (right) does battle with Ghostzapper in last year's Woodward, winding up second by a neck.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Saint Liam was not among the finalists for an Eclipse Award as champion older horse last year, yet it was he - not Roses in May, not Pleasantly Perfect, not even, in a figurative sense, Smarty Jones - who gave the Horse of the Year, Ghostzapper, the biggest run for his money.

Castledale will be entered in both Saturday's Strub and Sunday's San Antonio 'Cap.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Minister Eric, the winner of the Grade 2 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes last month, will not start in Saturday's Strub Stakes at Santa Anita after emerging from a workout on Monday with sore ankles, trainer Richard Mandella said.

Minister Eric worked three furlongs Monday at Santa Anita. The workout was supposed to be a half-mile, but was interrupted to avoid a fallen horse.

"The next day both ankles were a little jarred up," Mandella said. "We'll back off. We'll go easy for a couple of weeks and then start up again."

Coldntight gets another chance

ARCADIA, Calif. - Coldntight has been a disappointment in his 11-race career.

"He's like a big firecracker that never went off," trainer Bob Baffert said.

There is still time to make an impression. Friday at Santa Anita, Coldntight starts from the outside post in a $52,000 allowance race over 1 1/8 miles that drew 11 entrants. A victory could give Coldntight, 4, a much needed boost of confidence.

Not much separates contenders in feature

SAN MATEO, Calif. - A competitive band of seven sprinters takes center stage in Friday night's feature at Bay Meadows, a six-furlong, $32,000 claiming race that figures to be tough from start to finish.

The likely favorite is , who has won eight of 19 career starts, including his past four. Early on, I Love Racing will probably be chasing Smoke Till Dawn, who is 13 for 36 in his career and 12-4-3-0 here. Then he will have to hold off the late charge of Look Quick, who just beat Smoke Till Dawn and is 11 for 42 in his career and 11-6-2-2 here.

Tamweel stricken by throat ailment

In her first start for new trainer Tom Amoss, Tamweel ran a lackluster race in the Santa Monica Stakes at Santa Anita last Sunday, finishing sixth. After the race, she was found to have a throat infection.

NEW ORLEANS - Trainer Tom Amoss sent one of his barn's biggest stars, Tamweel, to Santa Anita for last Sunday's Grade 1 Santa Monica Stakes. A 5-year-old daughter of Gulch, Tamweel, who finished fourth in the 2004 Breeders' Cup Distaff, was making her first start in Amoss's care after being privately purchased for a reported $1 million by Tom Clark and Steve Davison of Rancho San Miguel, Calif. But when the gates opened, she didn't show her customary zeal for racing and finished a well-beaten sixth.

Daddy Joe primed for Whirlaway

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Maddy's Lion starts next in the Feb. 19 Fred Capossela.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Sometimes you have to take a step back to move forward. That's what the connections of Daddy Joe hope they accomplished by sending their highly regarded 3-year-old to Laurel Park last weekend.

After Daddy Joe won his maiden by 5 3/4 lengths in December, owner Ernie Paragallo had him entered in the Count Fleet Stakes here on Jan. 8. But that race was postponed a week due to poor track conditions. During that break, Daddy Joe sustained a bruised foot that forced him to miss the race when it was run on Jan. 15.
