Turfway cancels again

Turfway Park had to cancel its live racing yet again Wednesday night, although this one had nothing to do with weather.

A dump truck filled with sand struck a utility pole adjacent to the track Wednesday afternoon, causing a power outage throughout the track. This was the eighth time since the winter-spring meet began Jan. 1 that Turfway had canceled all or most of a program; the previous cancellations were caused by inclement weather. Since Jan. 20, Turfway has conducted just one full program.

Racing was scheduled to resume Thursday.

Gulfstream Park pick 6 carryover reaches $378,558

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A record Pick-6 carryover of $378,558 will be up for grabs on Thursday's 10 race program at Gulfstream Park. The previous record for a Gulfstream Pick-6 was $315,431 set on March 22, 2004.

The largest Pick-6 payoff in Gulfstream history was $309,788 recorded on Jan 17, 2001.

The disqualification of 2-5 favorite Blazing Pursuit from first to third in the 9th race and a victory by 45-1 Island Lore in the finale combined to create the record carryover. One winning ticket picking five winners paid $39,718.40 on Wednesday's card.

Rocky Gulch stood out at Sunland

The New Mexico Horse Breeders Association unveiled its honor roll for 2004, and although it doesn't distinguish one divisional winner as horse of the year, there is little doubt Rocky Gulch was the star. Named top 3-year-old male, Rocky Gulch comes off a fabulous campaign in which he won six of 10 races for $377,179. All six wins came in stakes for owner and breeder Larry Teague and trainer Terry Walker. Rocky Gulch won five of his last six, with wins coming at the three major New Mexico tracks - Sunland, Albuquerque, and Ruidoso.

Charles Town track report

Trainer Mark Fusco may have made a sharp claim when he plucked An Oscar for Bert out of last Friday's second race at Charles Town for $3,500.

An 8-year-old gelding, An Oscar for Bert romped by 14 lengths in the 1 1/8-mile claiming race, earning an 82 Beyer Speed Figure. He will now be eligible for $3,500 starter allowance races for new owner Fred Hart.

Although eight of An Oscar for Bert's victories have come on turf, he is 4 for 13 racing on dirt at Charles Town.

Philadelphia Park track report

At age 10, P Day may be a few steps slower than he was during his last full season of racing in 2003, when he won three stakes, including the Grade 3 Baltimore Breeders' Cup Handicap at Pimlico. But he is still earning his keep in the starter handicap ranks at Philadelphia Park.

Claimed for $4,000 by trainer Martin Ciresa in November when making his first start since May 2003, P Day has been third or better in four of his first five starts for his new connections.

Turf Paradise track report

Newark punched his ticket for next month's Phoenix Gold Cup, the marquee event of the Turf Paradise meet, with a smart win in last Saturday's $40,000 Swift Stakes.

"He did it all on his own," said rider Wilson Dieguez. "Generally he makes one run from behind. But today he wanted to be closer to the lead. Perhaps he didn't want mud kicked in his face."

Dash on a Mission takes spotlight

Trainer Denny Ekins will send out his stable's Grade 1-winning second stringer, Dash on a Mission, in the trials to the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby while resting his barn's star, 2004 champion 2-year-old Ocean Runaway.

The horses with the 10 fastest times from the four 400-yard trials qualify for the finals on Feb. 25.

Ocean Runaway was eligible to be entered in the trials for the $232,000 Winter Derby, but Ekins said, "We're giving him some time off. He deserves a break after racing so hard last year."
