Sugar Swirl led throughout Saturday's $251,600 Princess Elizabeth Stakes at Woodbine to score a 1 1/4-length victory over Kimchi.

Sugar Swirl set honest fractions and had a clear lead over a track labeled good, as both Kimchi and Classical Miss loomed into contention on the far turn. Sugar Swirl held Kimchi at bay through the stretch, completing 1 1/16 miles in 1:50. Classical Miss finished third in the nine-horse field of 2-year-old Canadian-bred fillies.

Humoristic wins the Grade 3, $150,000 Violet Stakes on Friday night at The Meadowlands Racetrack.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Jockey Harry Vega took it upon himself to script a new game plan for Humoristic in the Grade 3, $150,000 Violet Stakes on Friday night at The Meadowlands Racetrack.

Vega, riding Humoristic for the first time, said he studied Humoristic's past performances and noticed she was too far off the pace in prior stakes to make her rally effective.

"I warmed her up as much as I could so she could be there close, and I was lucky she was," Vega said. "I warmed her up to get her on her toes a little bit."

Weather key to Lawrence Realization

ELMONT, N.Y. - The $75,000 Lawrence Realization, postponed a week due to heavy rain, may not fare much better on Sunday since rain again is in the forecast at Belmont Park this weekend.

Only six 3-year-olds signed on for the race and the field figures to shrink to five or fewer if the 1 1/2-mile race is taken off the grass.

Among those who will not start if the course is either too wet or the race is taken off the grass is Olaya, a filly trained by Graham Motion who would be taking on the boys while making her U.S. debut in the Lawrence Realization.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Twice a year, Keeneland gives stakes-caliber fillies and mares a chance to shine at the infrequently run distance of 1 1/2 miles on turf. Patrick Biancone and Gary Stevens won the spring version, the Bewitch Stakes, with a Breeders' Cup-bound filly named Angara, and now they're back in the fall to try to win the Rood and Riddle Dowager with Louve Royale.

Cerin has his fingers crossed

ARCADIA, Calif. - Though trainer Bob Baffert will start two juvenile fillies Sunday in the $75,000 Anoakia Stakes at Santa Anita, he acknowledges that quantity does not usurp quality.

"I would feel better if Cotton Bay was in there," Baffert said, referring to the filly whose striking debut on Wednesday earned an 89 Beyer Speed Figure.

Even without that rocket, Baffert enters the six-furlong Anoakia with a fighting chance. Babe Hall and Naughtylittlehottie enter off modest maiden victories, and with some improvement either can win the Anoakia.

Wilko is being pointed for the Strub series.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Wilko, the winner of the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Lone Star Park, breezed three furlongs in 38.60 seconds at Hollywood Park on Friday, his first workout since undergoing ankle surgery in May.

Wilko is being pointed for the three-race Strub series for 4-year-olds of 2006, trainer Craig Dollase said. The first leg of that series is the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes over seven furlongs on Dec. 26.

"Actually, he's a little ahead of schedule," Dollase said. "He's doing well. It was an easy three-eighths work. He's been wanting to work."
