Pimlico: The Student scores for Lake

The Student wins the $75,000 Hoover Stakes in workmanlike fashion Sunday afternoon at Pimlico.

Trainer Scott Lake continued his early domination at Pimlico when he went 4 for 4 on a 10-race card, including The Student's three-quarter-length victory in the $75,000 Hoover Stakes.

Picking up right where he left off after winning the training title at Laurel Park, Lake went 9 for 15 over the first four days of Pimlico's meet.

Although The Student ($6) has won 16 of 31 lifetime starts, the Hoover was the 7-year-old gelding's first stakes victory.

Delaware: Princess Pelona prevails

Princess Pelona ($7) overtook pacesetter Dance Fee approaching the eighth pole and held on for a three-quarter-length victory in the $55,300 Winter Melody Stakes for fillies and mares at Delaware Park.

It was the second consecutive stakes win and the third added-money score in six starts since mid-November for the 6-year-old Princess Pelona.

Devons Smokin best in U. S. Bank Stakes

AUBURN, Wash. - Devons Smokin accelerated to the lead on the turn and withstood the late charge of Chestnut Lady to win Sunday's $40,000 U. S. Bank Stakes at Emerald Downs by 1 1-2 lengths. Wild R.N. held third after pressing the early pace.

Devons Smokin, who went off as the 5-2 favorite in a field of 11, covered the six furlongs in 1:10.20 under rider Julio Felix. Manuel Calvario saddled Devons Smokin for her first start outside of California, where she had been trained by Jeff Bonde.

T.H. Approval captures San Juan Capistrano

ARCADIA, Calif. - T.H. Approval became the first repeat winner of the $250,000 in nearly 40 years at Santa Anita on Sunday, the closing day of the winter-spring meeting.

T.H. Approval, sent off as the favorite, rallied four-wide in the final half-mile to win the turf marathon by a length over One Off. Quinquin the King finished third in the field of 12.

Ridden by Alex Solis, T.H. Approval ($4.40) ran about 1 3-4 miles on turf in 2:45.29.

Vaca City Flyer wins the five-furlong Rockridge in 55.25 seconds over the Lakeside Turf Course at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday breaking a 31-year-old course record.

ALBANY, Calif. - Vaca City Flyer ($7.60) broke a 31-year-old course record in her turf debut, winning the five-furlong Rockridge in 55.25 seconds over the Lakeside Turf Course at Golden Gate Fields on Sunday.

The 5-year-old mare broke in stride and sailed to a 5-length (five one-quarter) victory as she broke the 56-flat record held by Black Tornado since May 10, 1975.

Allswellthatnswell, last early, got up for second, outfinishing Vino Tinto by a head.

Leading rider Garcia heading south

ALBANY, Calif. - Apprentice jockey Martin Garcia, the leading rider at Golden Gate Fields, confirmed Sunday that he will move south to compete at Hollywood Park when the Golden Gate Fields meeting ends on May 7.

Garcia, who tied Northern California's perennial leader Russell Baze for the Bay Meadows riding title, held a 99-83 lead over Baze going into Sunday's races. If he defeats Baze, it would be the first time in more than 25 years Baze has lost a riding title in Northern California when he was healthy for the entire meeting.

Lady of Venice takes Appalachian

Julien Leparoux guides Lady of Venice to a 2 1/4-length victory Sunday in the $109,100 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Apprentice Julien Leparoux, who leads the Keeneland rider standings with just three of 15 days remaining in the spring meet, posted his second stakes victory of the meet when guiding Lady of Venice to a 2 1/4-length victory Sunday in the $109,100 .

In a field reduced by scratches from nine to five starters, Lady of Venice, a French import trained by Patrick Biancone, surged past front-running Saoirse Cat in the final furlong in capturing her North American debut. The winner returned $5.20 after finishing a mile in 1:35.85 over firm turf.

Woodbine cancels after sixth race

ETOBICOKE, Ontario ? Woodbine cancelled racing after the sixth race on Sunday due to poor track conditions, resulting from rain which pelted the Toronto area throughout the weekend.

The $125,000 Star Shoot Stakes, which was on the canceled portion of the card, has been rescheduled for Sunday.

Racing is scheduled to resume on Friday.

Aqueduct cancels after third race

Racing at Aqueduct was canceled Sunday after the third race when the jockeys voted unanimously not to ride, citing unsafe track conditions.

Approximately four inches of rain fell at Aqueduct between late Saturday and Sunday morning, which prompted management to cancel training Sunday morning.

Jockey Mike Luzzi, who finished second aboard Fighting Roy Kelly in the second race, said the track in the afternoon was "uneven" and had too much water on the inside.

Carthage wins the Golden Gate Fields Sprint by three lengths at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

ALBANY, Calif. - Carthage ($4.80) stunned Eclipse Award winner Lost in the Fog, winning the Golden Gate Fields Sprint by three lengths at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Lost in the Fog, making his first start since the Breeders' Cup, put his nose in front heading into the turn, but Carthage battled back to re-claim the lead and then began to open up. He led by a length at the quarter pole and opened his margin from there, covering six furlongs in 1:09.08 over a fast but cuppy track.
