One of last year's best is back

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Miss Me Not should have a decent pace to close into when she makes her 2006 debut in the Hastings feature race Sunday. The optional $50,000 claiming race drew 12 3-year-old fillies, but only 10 will be allowed to start. The horses that make up the body of the race are all eligible for a first-level allowance race, and the 6 1/2-furlong event appears to be wide open.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Good luck trying to keep up with the best California-bred sprinters these days.

In late March and early April, California-bred sprinters won graded stakes at venues as diverse as Arkansas and Dubai.

On March 25, Proud Tower Too won the $2 million Golden Shaheen at Nad Al Sheba racecourse in Dubai, outrunning fellow California-breds Thor's Echo and Jet West. On April 13, Bordonaro won the Grade 3 Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park.

Bargain exhibit A: Lava Man

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Before he became rich and famous, Lava Man was a useful turf horse. also was a claiming horse, which makes him a fitting equine celebrity for the $1.3 million California Gold Rush program Sunday at Hollywood Park.

Six stakes are included on the 10-race program for California-bred runners, with a recurring theme. That is, you don't have to spend a fortune to buy a good horse. Just ask trainer Doug O'Neill, who claimed Lava Man for $50,000 two years ago and developed him into a Grade 1 winner with earnings of more than $2 million.

Pellegrino ends his 17-month drought

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Trainer Roger Attfield and owner Gary Tanaka made it a sweep of Keeneland's two graded marathon turf stakes by sending out longshot Pellegrino to a three-quarter-length victory over Go Deputy in the Grade 3, $200,000 Elkhorn Stakes before 17,624 fans on closing day of the spring meet.

The victory came just two days after Attfield and Tanaka won the Grade 3 Bewitch with odds-on favorite Noble Stella. Both races are run at 1 1/2 miles.

Funny Cide back in with statebreds

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Funny Cide's return to statebred company for the first time since he was a 2-year-old highlights closing day Sunday at Aqueduct, which includes three restricted stakes.

Racing shifts to Belmont Park on Wednesday. The final Big A card features the $65,000 Kings Point Handicap at 1 1/8 miles and two $100,000 divisions of New York Stallion Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs, which were rained out on April 23.

Three-time stakes winner Areyoutalkintome is vulnerable trying 7 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's Tiznow.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Areyoutalkintome looked like a useful claim in December 2003 when he was plucked from a $32,000 maiden claiming win at Hollywood Park.

Two and a half years later, the 5-year-old gelding by Smokester is still going strong. His 30-start career includes 3 stakes wins, 8 wins overall, and earnings of $592,667.

"He's just a warrior, he tries every time," trainer Doug O'Neill said.

Jones will have major presence on undercard

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Trainer Marty Jones will have a busy afternoon at Hollywood Park on Sunday.

On the 10-race California Gold Rush program, Jones has six starters in five races, three in stakes and three in maiden and allowance races that have been given higher-than-normal purses for the card, dedicated to California-breds.

Those lesser races will provide Jones with his best chance for success.
