Bernardini in right spot after all

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - After dealing with a cough and a bruised foot following Bernardini's maiden victory at Gulfstream Park on March 4, trainer Tom Albertrani was looking forward to running the A.P. Indy colt in an allowance race on Friday, but he opted to run him in Saturday's 127th running of the $150,000 when the field came up with only four horses.

The more aggressive move turned out to be the right one after Bernardini tracked odds-on Luxembourg to the top of the stretch and drew off to win the Grade 3, one-mile stakes for 3-year-olds by 3 3/4 lengths.

No Oaks, but still a nice filly

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Not every 3-year-old filly can make it to the Kentucky Oaks. Take Bourbonette, entered in the Tuesday feature at Churchill Downs, for example.

A 10-race card with a first-level allowance as a modest highlight does little to suggest that the Oaks is right around the corner, but Bourbonette once was under consideration - if ever so briefly - for the filly classic.

But she decided to stay in south Florida for an extra week when trainer Michael Lerman offered her the mount on Gigawatt in Saturday's $150,000 .

Sutherland's decision proved to be the right one after she put up a flawless ride to guide Gigawatt to a half-length victory over 8-5 Old Forester and Spring House, who dead-heated for second in the Grade 3 Miami Mile.

Saint Stephen too good in Clark

Jim McCue / Maryland Jockey Club
Jockey Horacio Karamanos sends Saint Stephen through a narrow opening at the head of the stretch and drives to victory in the $85,000 Henry S. Clark Stakes at Pimlico.

Saint Stephen did not need a perfect trip to win the $69,250 Henry Clark at Pimlico, but he got one anyway.

Saint Stephen, under Horacio Karamanos, sat a few lengths off the dueling leaders down the backstretch of the one-mile turf race, cut the corner turning for home, and galloped away from his seven 3-year-old and up rivals.

Saint Stephen ($4.60) defeated Foufa's Warrior by 3 1/2 lengths, with Rubi Echo another 1 1/4 lengths back in third. Owned by Charles and Susan Harris and trained by Christophe Clement, Saint Stephen covered the mile on firm turf in 1:35.56.

ALBANY, Calif. - Apprentice jockey Martin Garcia, currently the leading rider at Golden Gate Fields with 107 victories, will miss the final week of the meeting after suffering a fractured left wrist in a spill.

Sam's Ace may earn Preakness spot

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - It was not until the final sixteenth of the Grade 1 Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park on April 1 that it became apparent that Sam's Ace would not finish in the top three. After stalking the pace for the first mile, he lost ground late to finish fourth. That performance could make Sam's Ace the favorite in Sunday's $250,000 Snow Chief Stakes, and if he runs well, Sam's Ace could make his next start in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 20.

Trainer Doug O'Neill expects a win from , having been impressed by the Gulfstream Park race.
