Diamond Dollars looks fastest of all

AUBURN, Wash. - What do we do with Diamond Dollars in Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong Federal Way Handicap?

Diamond Dollars, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Stravinsky, showed good speed before tiring in both of her starts at Sunland Park earlier this spring, the first time against maiden special weight company and the next time against $12,500 maidens. She was claimed out of her second start by trainer Bill Tollett, who has been known to move horses up off the claim. Still, there was little to prepare fans for her Emerald Downs debut against $25,000 maidens on May 5.

Better late than never: Loseth's special day

Hastings
Spaghetti Mouse's recent six-furlong work would have been a track record if it were a race.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Monday, when all of Canada celebrates the birthday of Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Empire from 1837 until her death in 1901, Hastings will honor a jockey, Chris Loseth, who ruled over the local jockey colony from 1975 until he retired last June.

In his unassuming way, Loseth announced he was retiring just moments before he went out to ride his final race. Management at Hastings felt that Loseth, the track's all-time leading rider in both wins and stakes wins, deserved a more suitable send-off.

Gonzalez in right place to rebound

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Trainer Nick Gonzalez had a whale of a season at Fort Erie last year, finishing with a 30-percent win rate and a meet-leading 56 wins, 17 more than runner-up Lyle Morden.

Then it was off to Tampa Bay Downs, where for the first time Gonzalez raced in the winter. The results posted there by his 20-plus horse outfit weren't pretty. He won less than a handful of races, and his win rate was 7 percent.

BALTIMORE - Though he has won 50 percent of his races - including last year's Breeders' Cup Mile - Artie Schiller has had his share of tough beats. One of the toughest came here last Preakness Day when Cool Conductor nosed out Artie Schiller at the wire in the $200,000 Dixie Handicap at Pimlico

Funny Cide no longer brightest star

BALTIMORE - Three years ago this weekend, he was all that. Funny Cide won the 2003 Preakness by almost 10 lengths, initiating three frantic weeks of speculation that racing was about to get its first Triple Crown winner in a quarter-century.

Now 6, and carrying decidedly less star power than when he hit his peak of popularity with his Preakness romp, Funny Cide is returning to Pimlico for a Preakness Day encore. The race is the $100,000 William Donald Schaefer Handicap, which drew a field of seven older horses, with Funny Cide slated to break from the outside post.

Peter Pan a Preakness preliminary

ELMONT, N.Y. - Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes has long been a key stepping-stone to the Belmont Stakes for late developers. Traditionally situated two weeks before the Belmont, it was pushed back to three weeks out this year and as a result it will be run the same day as the Preakness, which makes it something akin to the preliminary bout before the main event.
