'Freedom' makes first Texas start

Tale of Freedom has apparently settled in nicely at Lone Star Park near Dallas. After racing exclusively in Florida, she will make her Texas debut on Sunday, and in preparation for the appearance worked a bullet five furlongs in 59.20 seconds May 10.

Tale of Freedom will be one of the top choices in the featured eighth race, a one-mile allowance on turf for fillies who have never won three races. She will be making her first start since March 27, when she finished fifth in a second-level allowance at Gulfstream Park.

State champs face some speedy challengers

Can last year's champions handle the new shooters? That's the question handicappers must answer Sunday when assessing the field in the $40,000 Lady Slipper Stakes at Canterbury Park.

Restricted to Minnesota-bred fillies and mares, the six-furlong Lady Slipper will showcase Bleu's Apparition and Sentimental Charm, who were named statebred champion in their respective divisions and who were both honored last week by the Minnesota Thoroughbred Association.

Lincoln: Mr Tire ready to go

Mr Tire may rate a slight edge when an evenly matched field of seven start in the $15,000 Journal Star Stakes for 3-year-olds at Lincoln.

Trained by Bill Conyers, Mr Tire took the 6 1/2-furlong Baxter Stakes at Fonner Park on April 22, defeating his chief rival in this race, My Halo. He came back on eight days' rest to finish third against second-level allowance company and should be ready to a strong effort. Regular rider Dennis Collins will be aboard from post 2.

'Top Notch' comes off Ky. Oaks

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Top Notch Lady should be tough going from the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks to the Grade 3, $250,000 Selene Stakes on Sunday at Woodbine.

The Selene, a 1 1/16-mile race, has lured five other 3-year-old fillies, including Woodbine Oaks nominees Like a Gem, Questuary, and Seductively.

Top Notch Lady won 3 of 6 starts as a 2-year-old, including the Glorious Song Stakes in November. She was absent for four months heading into the Grade 3 Bourbonette Breeders' Cup Stakes at Turfway on March 25, which she won by a neck over the Polytrack surface.

Extra yardage could help Chestnut Lady

AUBURN, Wash. - Devons Smokin and Chestnut Lady, the one-two finishers in the six-furlong U.S. Bank Stakes on April 23, will be rematched at 6 1/2 furlongs in Sunday's $40,000 Federal Way Handicap at Emerald Downs.

Devons Smokin, a 3-year-old daughter of Devon Lane from the barn of trainer Manny Calvario, employed a quick move on the turn to win the U.S. Bank by 1 1/2 lengths in 1:10.20. Last year Devons Smokin won 2 of 6 starts, beating maidens at Golden Gate Fields before scoring a convincing 3 1/2-length victory in the $125,000 CTBA Stakes for California-breds at Del Mar.

Heiler finds winning formula

'Queen' returns home

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Queenmab'sdaughter returns to northern California in an attempt to regain her winning form in Sunday's Bay Meadows feature, a $62,500 optional claimer for fillies and mares at six furlongs.

A 4-year-old filly, is winless in three starts since venturing south to meet stakes company last year. She has hit the board in 8 of 9 northern California starts.

She faces five rivals Sunday, including the speedy , a stakes winner here in the Courtship Stakes as a 2-year-old; and Gotta Go Gal, who has hit the board in her past four starts.

Diamond Dollars looks fastest of all

AUBURN, Wash. - What do we do with Diamond Dollars in Sunday's 6 1/2-furlong Federal Way Handicap?

Diamond Dollars, a Kentucky-bred daughter of Stravinsky, showed good speed before tiring in both of her starts at Sunland Park earlier this spring, the first time against maiden special weight company and the next time against $12,500 maidens. She was claimed out of her second start by trainer Bill Tollett, who has been known to move horses up off the claim. Still, there was little to prepare fans for her Emerald Downs debut against $25,000 maidens on May 5.
