Charles Town: Several speedsters in short sprint

Shamss, Rainbow Inthestorm, and Riproarious - all of whom have displayed high speed in longer sprints out of town - will try to replicate that form going 4 1/2 furlongs in the $50,000 Jiva Coolit Stakes for 3-year-olds at Charles Town.

Shamss, whose Beyer Figure of 98 in a nose loss against second-level allowance sprinters at Delaware Park is the best figure in the field, is coupled with Riproarious, who exits a six-length win against $35,000 claimers at Delaware.

Sweet Aloe steps up while hot

MIAMI - After going winless in her first nine career starts, Sweet Aloe has suddenly turned into a killer, winning her last two outings by a combined 14 lengths. On Saturday, will get a class check when she goes off among the favorites in the second division of Calder's $45,000 Sara's Success Stakes, an overnight event for fillies and mares at 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf.

Gambardella among new inductees

EAST BOSTON, Mass. - Three names recognized nationally as synonymous with New England racing will enter the region's Hall of Fame at the Sports Museum in the TD Banknorth Garden.

The 2006 class consists of Mom's Command, the 1985 3-year-old filly champion; Carl Gambardella, New England's all-time leading jockey; and Lou Smith, the former president of Rockingham Park.

Count on Just Michel in Classen

Just Michel, a 6-year-old who has been in the money in 27 of her 34 starts and has won 16, should rule an odds-on choice when she faces eight Ohio-bred fillies and mares over six furlongs in the $50,000 Dr. T.F. Classen Memorial Handicap at Thistledown.

Just Michel has won 3 of her 4 starts this year, all at Beulah Park. In her last start, May 6, she won the restricted Alyssa Handicap.

Canterbury: Mr. d'Or faces many he's beaten

Five 3-year-old colts were entered in the $40,000 St. Paul Stakes, the featured event at Canterbury Park.

Mr. d'Or may prove the favorite in the six-furlong St. Paul. A winner of two races at Tampa this winter, Mr. d'Or bested several other members of the St. Paul field in his last outing, when he prevailed in a front-running effort in the Shecky Greene Handicap at Arlington three weeks ago. Dale Bennett trains Mr. d'Or, who will be ridden by Dean Butler.

Louisiana Downs: Betnow the one to beat

Trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Luis Quinonez have won at a 38-percent rate together in the last 1 1/2 years at Louisiana Downs. Saturday, they will team with Betnow in the track's featured seventh race, an optional claimer for horses bred in Louisiana.

The seven-furlong race is subbing as the feature after the scheduled stakes, the $50,000 Chapel Belle for 3-year-old fillies on turf, drew an insufficient number of entries Wednesday.

Horses head north, where weather is cool

Arizona racing makes its annual migration north to Prescott Valley on Saturday as Yavapai Downs opens its doors for its sixth summer meeting. Racing concluded at Turf Paradise in Phoenix last Sunday, and Yavapai Downs, located about 1 1/2 hours north, kicks off its 60-day meet, with racing to be conducted through Sept. 5.

As temperatures begin to soar in the Phoenix area, the Prescott Valley area, located at an elevation of about 5,000 feet, remains cool. Yavapai Downs was inaugurated in 2001, replacing the old Prescott Downs.

So far so good for London Snow

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer John Charalambous ended a 10-year stakes drought when Summer Girlfriend captured the Star Shoot on April 30 here at Woodbine.

Now, less than four weeks later, Charalambous has a shot at his second straight stakes victory when he sends out London Snow in Saturday's $125,000 Lady Angela, a seven-furlong race for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies.

Owned by Fred Martin, London Snow was victorious in her career debut at 2, winning at five furlongs here July 1.
