Favored Bonfante wins Fort Mason

ALBANY, Calif. - Bonfante ($4.80), content to sit off the leaders early, moved into contention on the turn and rallied through traffic to capture the $75,000 Fort Mason at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

The 5-year-old gelding angled wide into the lane and had pacesetting Slew's Prince measured for the stretch run. He pulled away from that one with ease and was not seriously threatened by Mr. Ching, who made a strong move following him into the lane. He won the five-furlong turf race for Cal-breds by 1 1/4 lengths in 56.31 seconds with Slew's Prince running third.

Bordonaro best in Ancient Title

ARCADIA, Calif. - Bordonaro proved to be the fastest gun in the West on Saturday in the Grade 1, $220,000 , winning the six-furlong race by a length over a stubborn Thor's Echo in a swift 1:07.93 at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

It will take considerably longer, however, for his connections to decide whether to go to the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Nov. 4, because Bordonaro would have to be supplemented to the race by owners Fred Carrillo and Dan Cassella.

Difficult comeback spot for Whilly

ARCADIA, Calif. - In his first start in more than six months, Whilly faces a difficult test in Monday's $60,000 War Chant Stakes at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

The War Chant has not drawn the world-class competition that Whilly has faced in the last year, but for a restricted race at a mile on turf it has a strong field.

Feature full of top sprinters

STICKNEY, Ill. - The connections of Smoke Smoke Smoke were in the market for a comeback race, and Christine Janks, the trainer of Fifteen Rounds, probably was more keen on keeping her horse in Chicago than shipping him to Keeneland for the Phoenix Stakes, given the last 10-week period of his career. Not only did these two crack sprinters land in the featured eighth on Monday at Hawthorne, but so did Alabama Clay and High Expectations, two more near the top of the local one-turn division.
