Two from 2006 could be players in top ranks

AUBURN, Wash. - One of the more interesting aspects of the early part of this year's Emerald Downs meeting will be to see how Westsideclyde and See Ya Later Slew, two of the most exciting runners to emerge at last year's stand, will stack up against the best in the local handicap division.

In the case of Westsideclyde, at least, we probably won't have to wait long.

Arravale, 4, points for Nassau

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Arravale, Canada's Horse of the Year and champion female turf horse in 2006, checked back into Woodbine without fanfare a couple of weeks ago and has been gearing up for her 4-year-old bow.

Funny Cide will have to work for repeat

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Last year's Kings Point Handicap turned out to be a cozy spot for Funny Cide, who set soft fractions en route to a gate-to-wire victory over Gold and Roses as the 3-5 favorite. While Funny Cide heads Sunday's field in name recognition, he will find things much tougher in the 27th renewal of the $65,000 King's Point.

Funny Cide, the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner, will face five fellow New York-breds including in-form runners Accountforthegold and Who What Win in the nine-furlong Kings Point, one of two stakes on closing day at Aqueduct.

Top Cal-breds absent from Gold Rush

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The 10-race California Gold Rush program at Hollywood Park on Sunday will be without several leading members of the current California-bred class.

Stakes winners such as Bordonaro, Lava Man, McCann's Mojave, Mystical Plan, River's Prayer, and Shaggy Mane are being pointed for graded stakes in California and Kentucky, while Notional, Phar to Win, and Proud Tower Too are recovering from injury.

All of them would have fit well in various stakes on the Gold Rush program.
