Bohannan, Anthony team up again

ELMONT, N.Y. - The Tom Bohannan-John Ed Anthony reunion tour will play New York this summer, hoping to rekindle some of the magic they had in the early 1990s when they campaigned Preakness winners Pine Bluff and Prairie Bayou.

Bohannan has seven horses stabled in Belmont Park's Barn 50 but will more than double that number in the coming weeks.

"I have three older horses that will be here within two weeks and seven 2-year-olds to bring up as they get ready," Bohannan said. "Two are pretty close."

At long last, spring arrives in N.Y.

ELMONT, N.Y. - After an interminable four-month stint on Aqueduct's inner track and an uninspiring, albeit brief, spring meet on the much-maligned main track, New York racing gets a much-needed change of scenery Wednesday when Belmont Park opens for a 60-day meeting.

Racing will be conducted five days a week through July 22 with a 1 p.m. Eastern post most days. Wednesday's opening-day card, featuring the Grade 3, $100,000 Westchester Handicap, offers free parking and free grandstand admission.

Rags to Riches gets a valuable lesson

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Rags to Riches had such smooth sailing in winning back-to-back Grade 1 races at Santa Anita that trainer Todd Pletcher has felt compelled to give the Kentucky Oaks favorite some schooling in her morning training recently.

So when Rags to Riches, who will be a solid favorite Friday in the 133rd Oaks off dominant victories in the Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks, was out for her final prerace workout early Sunday over the Keeneland Polytrack, she was placed snugly inside of her Kentucky Derby-bound stablemate Circular Quay throughout a two-horse workout.

Ready for Derby raid

ALBANY, Calif. - "Hopefully, it's the start of a big week," owner Dan Jelladian said after Trickey Trevor's victory in Sunday's Oakland Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

The big week for Jelladian would include another victory Saturday at Churchill Downs, when Bwana Bull competes in the Kentucky Derby.

Last year, Trickey Trevor won the Grade 2 Churchill Downs Handicap on Derby Day.

"When Trickey Trevor won at Churchill Downs, it was like a dream come true," Jelladian said. "It's something I'll never forget. Going to the Derby this year would be the coup de grace."

Local fixture set to kick up his heels

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Red Dog is to Shively as Oliver Twist was to London, Paul Bunyan to the Upper Midwest timberland, Tom and Huck to the Mississippi.

That is, it is impossible to think of the character without thinking of a place. In the case of Gary "Red Dog" Hartlage, who was born and raised and remains tethered to the working-class suburb nestled just southwest of downtown Louisville, about a $10 cab ride from Churchill Downs, a lifetime of training racehorses is inextricably linked to Shively, where he has lived his entire 60 years.

Just Rushing rewards patient handling

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Sid Attard refused to rush, and as a result Just Rushing made a successful seasonal debut in last Saturday's $125,000 Vigil here at Woodbine.

Just Rushing was nominated to the $125,000 Jacques Cartier here April 14, but Attard elected to give him more time.

"We took our time getting him ready," said Attard, who has been leading trainer in races won at the past two Woodbine meetings. "He's a funny horse - you have to take your time with him, even when you work him. You have to space his works and races out. Otherwise, he'll fall apart."

Buzzards Bay poised for encore

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Buzzards Bay won 2 of 4 starts and $503,036 in a 2006 campaign cut short by injury. His trainer, Ron Ellis, thinks that Buzzards Bay can do better this year.

"He seems like a much better horse than last year," Ellis said. "I think the time off has done him well."

Ellis will know by the end of the summer whether his opinion is correct. Buzzards Bay will make his first start in nearly 11 months in Saturday's $150,000 Mervyn Leroy Handicap over 1 1/16 miles. Buzzards Bay's main goal for the summer is the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on June 30, Ellis said.

Winning Move Stable sweeps Aqueduct stakes

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - While most people are looking forward to Wednesday’s opening of Belmont Park, owner Steve Sigler and his partners with Winning Move Stable probably hated to see Aqueduct come to an end on Sunday.
