Toronto Cup again in familiar hands

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sam-Son Farm, trainer Mark Frostad, and jockey Todd Kabel continued their domination of the Toronto Cup with Windward Islands here at Woodbine on Saturday.

Windward Islands, a Kentucky-bred who became a stakes winner in the 1 1/8-mile turf race for 3-year-olds, was the fifth straight Toronto Cup winner and seventh in the last eight years for Kabel.

Sam-Son and Frostad have won the last six Toronto Cups in which they fielded an entrant.

Calif. fair circuit moves on to Sonoma

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Northern California fairs move into uncharted territory Wednesday when the Sonoma portion of the combined Solano-Sonoma Wine Country race meeting shifts here from Vallejo. The Solano County Fair meeting in Vallejo ran for one week, and now the Sonoma County Fair meet in Santa Rosa will run for three weeks, including one week after the fair closes. It will be the first time a fair meet runs without an actual fair to accompany the racing.

Tiago in no rush to run with elders

DEL MAR, Calif. - Tiago, a sharp winner of the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park on Saturday, is more likely to make his next start outside of California against 3-year-olds than meet older horses for the first time in the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 19, trainer John Shirreffs said Sunday.

Solano looks to expand via harness racing

The Solano County Fair's general manager, Joe Barkett, was generally pleased with the fair's five-day run, shortened from the 10 in past years. The fair's meet in Vallejo ran from last Wednesday through Sunday.

Solano and Sonoma counties combined race meets this year, with the final three weeks of the combined four-week meeting to be run at Santa Rosa, in Sonoma County, beginning Wednesday. One of those weeks is technically a second week of the Solano meet.

All-sources handle hits record average

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Hollywood Park concluded its 63-day spring-summer meeting on Sunday with a record all-sources average handle of $11,335,575 and growth in ontrack average attendance and handle, according to figures released by the racetrack.

The all-sources average handle improved 8.9 percent over 2006, and beat the previous record of $11.1 million set in 2002.

Maintaining Polytrack a learning experience

DEL MAR, Calif. - Del Mar's new Polytrack surface opened for training Thursday and generally received positive reviews its first few days. But on Monday, a change in the way the surface had been maintained had scores of trainers and several jockeys agitated, only 48 hours before Polytrack was scheduled to be unveiled for racing on Wednesday's opening-day card.

Vauquelin puts Walsh on the radar

DEL MAR, Calif. - Trainer Kathy Walsh has never had a stable that commands great attention, to insiders or casual racing observers. That may be about to change this summer at Del Mar.

Vauquelin, who starts in Wednesday's Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar, may push Walsh, 67, back into the spotlight after a few quiet seasons without a leading horse.

An Irish-bred colt who began his career in Europe, Vauquelin starts in the third division of the Oceanside, following a sharp win at Hollywood Park on June 10.

More mature Tiago wins Swaps

INGLEWOOD, Calif.-Tiago won the Santa Anita Derby in April as a 29-1 outsider in search of respect in the nation’s 3-year-old division.

He won Saturday’s $368,250 Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park as an even-money favorite, emphasizing his status as the leading 3-year-old male in California.

Tiago ($4) closed along the rail through the stretch to win the Grade 2 Swaps by 2 1/2 lengths over Albertus Maximus. Souvenir Slew, a 23-1 outsider, finish third in the field of six.
