Shakespeare flourishes in new role

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Shakespeare took a giant step toward the Breeders' Cup Mile with his jaw-dropping victory in Sunday's Grade 1, $1 million Woodbine Mile.

With Garrett Gomez in the irons, and making just his second start since the 2005 Breeders' Cup Turf, Shakespeare came flying up the inside to score by a going-away length.

"It was awesome," said winning trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, reflecting on Shakespeare's performance from Belmont Park on Monday morning. "He's a very, very talented horse.

Sierra Sunset romps to keep partners on a roll

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Two-year-olds took leading roles again at Bay Meadows last week.

The Jeff Bonde-trained Sierra Sunset put everything together in an eight-length victory in the $72,310 Bay Meadows Juvenile for his first stakes win Saturday.

His victory, combined with stablemate Run Brother Ron's win in the Beau Brummel at Fairplex last week, made a good week for the partnership of Phil Lebherz, Al Mariani, George Schmitt, and Carol Wirth. Lebherz and Schmitt are also owners of Run Brother Ron.

Exclusive Eagle upsets Muckleshoot

Exclusive Eagle battled back after surrendering the lead on the far turn to post a $19.20 upset in the $50,000 Muckleshoot Tribal Classic on Sunday at Emerald Downs.

Exclusive Eagle inherited the lead when the pacesetting Reno Ringo went wrong on the backside in the 1 1/16-mile Muckleshoot Tribal Classic. He yielded to Norm's Nephew coming to the quarter pole, but came back on under rider Gallyn Mitchell to score by three-quarters of a length in 1:41.80. Norm's Nephew held second.

Dave by a nose in Cole

Dave capped a marvelous weekend for trainer Barclay Tagg when his late rally landed him at the wire first by a nose over Al Basha in Sunday's $112,800 Ashley T. Cole Handicap for New York-breds at Belmont Park. It was a head back to Spurred.

It was the third stakes win in two days for Tagg, who on Saturday won the Grade 2 Futurity and Grade 3 Noble Damsel. Tagg won four races from six starters at Belmont over the weekend.

Shakespeare flies home to win Woodbine Mile

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It’s not exactly "Win and you’re in," but favored Shakespeare stamped himself as a serious contender for next month’s Breeders' Cup Mile with an exciting come-from-behind victory in Sunday’s $1 million Woodbine Mile.

Shakespeare rated kindly in midpack on the backstretch of the Grade 1 turf race, about seven lengths off Remarkable News, who set moderate fractions of 23.82 and 46.71 seconds.

Miss Macy Sue blazes to Masters win

ERIE, Pa. - Miss Macy Sue is now the track record holder for six furlongs at Presque Isle Downs after winning the $400,000 Masters on Saturday. The running time of 1.08.21 was .05 quicker than Ravalo's record last Sunday, a day when times were extremely fast after a few inches of rain fell on the Tapeta surface. That time was two seconds faster than any other over the surface.

Lear's Princess beats Rags to Riches

Lear's Princess, with Eibar Coa up, outruns Rags to Riches to win the Grade 1, $250,000 Gazelle States at Belmont Park on Saturday.
ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin was right. Saturday was the right time to take on Belmont Stakes winner Rags to Riches.

Though Rags to Riches ran a very good race in her first start in three months, Lear's Princess, trained by McLaughlin, ran just a touch better, running past Rags to Riches in deep stretch to record a half-length victory in the Grade 1, $250,000 Gazelle Stakes before 7,361 at Belmont. It was two lengths back to Tough Tiz's Sis in third.

Dance Away Capote storms home

ELMONT, N.Y. - A bit softer company and a more lively pace helped Dance Away Capote return to the winner's circle in Saturday's Grade 3, $113,500 Noble Damsel Handicap at Belmont Park.

Under a terrific ride from Alan Garcia, Dance Away Capote, ninth of 10 down the backside, rallied six wide in the stretch and motored past Pommes Frites and Bayou's Lassie in midstretch to roll to a 4 1/2-length score.

Fantastic Shirl, the only horse behind Dance Away Capote down the backside, rallied to get second by 1 3/4 lengths over Pommes Frites, the 3-1 favorite.

Love Handles runs down speed

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Sixteen winners yes, but the Arlington Park meet has doled out plenty of frustration to trainer Brian Williamson, who also has sent out 28 horses to finish second and 24 more that checked in third.

Until Saturday, Love Handles was part of that bad-luck parade, but in the Ada L. Rice Illinois Owners Stakes, things finally broke her way - and Williamson's.

'Majesty' streak grows

The 6-year-old gelding Mt. Majesty ($5) extended his winning streak to four races by romping to a four-length victory in the $50,000 Genesee Valley Breeders' Handicap for New York-breds at Finger Lakes.

Mt. Majesty, now 12 for 29 lifetime, has been claimed four times since he ran fourth in last year's Genesee Valley, most recently for $12,500 by trainer Nirka Huertas on July 24. He covered 1 1/16 miles under jockey Pedro Rodriguez in 1:46.36.

Rises the Phoenix, the 8-5 second choice, finished second with Clery's Contender third.
