Swiss Current wins CTBA Marian

POMONA, Calif. - The 2007 Los Angeles County Fair race meet has been good for the stallion Swiss Yodeler and trainer Doug O'Neill. A decisive victory by Swiss Current ($6.20) in the $63,700 CTBA Marian Stakes on Monday at Fairplex Park was the seventh at the meet for offspring of Swiss Yodeler, and seventh for O'Neill, both meet highs. Aaron Gryder rode Swiss Current to the 2 1/4-length victory over the 7-5 favorite, D Pirates Marker, in the 1 1/16-mile race for California-bred 3-year-old fillies. Lt. Lorraine finished third.

Rags to Riches will be back, trainer says

Oak Tree renews with Santa Anita

The Oak Tree Racing Association, which has conducted racing at Santa Anita every fall since 1969, on Monday extended its lease with the track's Los Angeles Turf Club through 2016, Oak Tree's executive vice president, Sherwood Chillingworth announced.

"We've had an enjoyable relationship with the management and employees of the Los Angeles Turf Club, and we are pleased that this partnership will now proceed well into the future," Chillingworth said in a statement.

Meier rides 4,000th winner

The popular Chicago jockey Randy Meier notched his 4,000th career victory on Sunday - closing day - at Arlington.

Meier won Sunday's second race in his signature style: hustling out of the gate, making the lead, and nursing his mount - a well-bet first-time starter named Officer Frank - to the wire.

Lear's Princess emerges to fill a void

ELMONT, N.Y. - Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said he had mixed emotions when his filly Lear's Princess upset Rags to Riches in Saturday's Grade 1 Gazelle Stakes. Those feelings continued when he learned that Rags to Riches will miss the Breeders' Cup Distaff and the rest of the year with a hairline fracture to her right front pastern.

McLaughlin is close friends with Todd Pletcher, the trainer of Rags to Riches, but at the same time Lear's Princess now becomes one of the favorites for next month's $2 million Distaff at Monmouth Park.

Apprentice jockey Melanie Giddings recorded her first career winner at Fort Erie on Monday, guiding Blue Eyed Taylor ($4.40) to victory in the fifth race. Giddings began her career at Woodbine on Sept. 7 and had ridden in six races there before finishing second in her debut at Fort Erie on Sunday.

Graded stakes try next for P.S.U. Grad

POMONA, Calif. - The competition is about to get tougher for 2-year-old filly P.S.U. Grad, whose impressive victory Saturday in the $126,350 Barretts Debutante at Fairplex will be a springboard to a graded stakes race. Trainer Craig Dollase said P.S.U. Grad would be nominated to three upcoming Gradeo1's - the Oak Leaf on Sept. 29 at Santa Anita, the Aclibiades on Oct. 5 at Keeneland, and the Frizette on Oct. 6 at Belmont.

Grasshopper fires a bullet

Grasshopper completed his preparations for the Super Derby on Monday when he worked a bullet five furlongs at his Churchill Downs base. He is scheduled to fly into Louisiana Downs on Wednesday, and will be ridden in Saturday's Grade 2, $500,000 race by Robby Albarado.

Grasshopper worked right after the renovation break, breezing in 1:00.60. The move was the fastest of 33 at the distance. Annie Finney, an exercise rider, was aboard for trainer Neil Howard.

BC Juvenile Turf next target for Prussian

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Woodbine Mile was not the only race here Sunday to produce potential candidates for the Breeders' Cup at Monmouth Park.

Prussian, winner of the Grade 3 Summer at one mile on turf, is pointing for the $1 million Juvenile Turf, a 1 1/16-mile race that will be one of three new Breeders' Cup events contested on Oct. 26.

Owned by Gary Knapp's Monticule LLC and trained by Bill Mott, Prussian was making his second start in the $251,600 Summer after winning his maiden by 6 3/4 lengths at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Saratoga.

Mass Cap returns with back class

The $500,000 Massachusetts Handicap returns for the first time since 2004 this Saturday at Suffolk Downs. Because the 1 1/8-mile race was shelved the last two years, it is now ungraded, but it is still expected to draw Brass Hat and Evening Attire, two Grade 1 winners - albeit several years removed from their biggest victories - when entries are drawn Wednesday.
