Drill Down suffers fatal breakdown

ARCADIA, Calif. – The first fatal breakdown on Cushion Track at Santa Anita occurred Monday morning when the top 2-year-old colt Drill Down shattered his left cannon bone at the quarter pole and later was euthanized.

Drill Down was working seven furlongs soon after 8 a.m. After passing the quarter pole, he broke down without warning and sent jockey Michael Baze tumbling to the ground. The bone penetrated the skin on Drill Down's left leg.

After Market ships for Kelso

ELMONT, N.Y. - The connections of After Market made Saturday's $250,000 Kelso Breeders' Cup Handicap a much more interesting race when they decided to ship the 4-year-old from Southern California to Belmont Park for the Grade 2 race.

Owner Marty Wygod made the decision to run After Market in the one-mile Kelso, and said After Market will now be pointed to the Breeders' Cup Mile instead of the Breeders' Cup Turf at 1 1/2 miles.

"If it doesn't work, I'm the one responsible," Wygod said from his office in New York.

A coup for Gold Cup by getting Student Council

STICKNEY, Ill. - When the Illinois Racing Board awarded 2008 racing dates to the state's racetracks in a meeting last week, chairman Joe Sinopoli argued against granting Arlington Park's request to race through mid-October on the grounds that such a schedule would imperil the Hawthorne Gold Cup, which often has served as a prep race for a horse or two with designs on the Breeders' Cup Classic.

Latin Rhythms suffers fatal injury at Hollywood

Latin Rhythms, the winner of the El Cajon Stakes at Del Mar in August, was euthanized on Sunday after suffering a sesamoid injury at the end of a workout at Hollywood Park, trainer Ron Ellis said.

Latin Rhythms was being prepared for a start in the $500,000 Indiana Derby at Hoosier Park on Oct. 6.

"He was working a mile," Ellis said. "It happened inside the eighth pole."

Next for Grasshopper is anybody’s guess

BOSSIER CITY, La. – The next-race plans for Going Ballistic, who won the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby on Saturday, have already been made, while the agenda for Grasshopper, who was second in the race at 1-5, was still being determined as of Monday.

The horses finished a length apart in the 1?1/8-mile race, with Going Ballistic closing from last to run down Grasshopper. Going Ballistic equaled his career-best Beyer Speed Figure, a 95.

Pederson grabs his first graded win

SAN MATEO, Calif. - What started as a gray, rainy day at Bay Meadows on Saturday turned out to be a perfect afternoon for Now Victory as he won the Grade 3, $140,000 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Handicap.

While there were no rainbows to be seen, there was a $90,000 pot of gold in the winner's circle for owners John Harris and Per Antonsen, and $64.60 at the mutuel windows for those betting on the 6-year-old gelding.

Cloudy's Knight aided by setup

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Cloudy's Knight was unable to run down the front-running Last Answer when he made his first start at Woodbine here in the Aug. 26 Nijinsky at 1 1/2 miles on yielding turf.

But the scenario was different at Woodbine on Sunday as Last Answer failed to show his customary early foot and Cloudy's Knight rallied from just off the pace for a one-length victory under rider Ramsey Zimmerman in the Grade 2, $302,000 Sky Classic at 1o3/8 miles on firm going.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Celtic Dreamin had a perfect trip Sunday to easily win the $263,780 British Columbia Breeders' Cup Derby by 5 1/2 lengths over Gandolf at Hastings. Sent off as the second choice, Celtic Dreamin paid $8.50 to win.

Golden Gate surface nearly done

ALBANY, Calif. - Workers at Golden Gate Fields are expected to finish laying the Tapeta synthetic surface over the one-mile racetrack by Wednesday, and the track will open for training Oct. 6, according to the general manager of Golden Gate Fields, Robert Hartman.

Some horses will be shipped in as early as Oct. 1 to test the surface, and the barn area will be opened Oct. 5, Hartman said. The Golden Gate meeting begins Nov. 7.

Fairplex: Frank the Barber splashes to a win

An unusual rainstorm in the typically hot, dry month of September created a rare wet track at Fairplex Park, which was fine for allowance-caliber 3-year-old Frank the Barber. Racing on sloppy going, the gelding won the $99,000 Pomona Derby by a length over Big Bad Leroybrown, with Mr. Nightlinger third. The morning-line favorite, Daytona, was scratched

The meet's leading jockey, Martin Pedroza, rode Frank the Barber ($6.80) to victory for trainer Gary Stute. Frank the Barber ran the 1 1/8 miles in 1:53.07.
