Gulf Coast Special, who has spent the better part of this year in Texas, returns home to Indiana on Friday night as the likely favorite in the $45,000 Miss Indiana Stakes for statebred 2-year-old fillies at Hoosier Park at six furlongs.

Sold for $30,000 at the Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds in training sale at Lone Star Park last April, Gulf Coast Special made her debut for trainer Danny Pish at Retama Park on Oct. 20 and eked out a neck victory after pressing a swift pace and dueling through the stretch with the runner-up, Superior Thief.

Sad ending for Casino Evil

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Casino Evil was euthanized some 24 hours after breaking down Saturday in the Ack Ack Handicap at Churchill Downs, bringing a sad end to what had been an underdog's tale for a cleverly named colt.

As a weanling, Casino Evil had his right eye surgically removed after a paddock accident - hence the play on words in his name - and despite the setback, the colt was able to become a multiple stakes winner of more than $300,000.

Mesic enjoys breakthrough year

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Marko Mesic is hardly a stranger to the racetrack, as he owned horses for more than 25 years while operating construction and restaurant businesses.

But the 52-year-old Mesic sold his off-track interests and took out his trainer's license two years ago, and he has established a much higher profile in his new profession this year.

Heading into the final five weeks of the Ontario season, the Mesic barn had won 11 of its 50 races here. Combined with a 4-for-6 mark at Fort Erie, Mesic's winning rate was an impressive 27 percent.
