Watch out for Florida shipper Golden Strategy

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Marty Wolfson doesn't do it often, but it usually pays to take note when the trainer does ship a horse from his south Florida headquarters to New York for a stakes race.

Since 2001, Wolfson has shipped in five horses to New York and won two stakes, with a second and a third. On Wednesday, Wolfson put Golden Strategy on a plane bound for New York and Saturday's Grade 2, $150,00 Red Smith Handicap at Aqueduct. In 2001, Wolfson won the 1 3/8-mile Red Smith with Mr. Pleasentfar. In 2006, Wolfson won the Grade 1 Forego at Saratoga with Pomeroy.

Clement, Pletcher barns gear up

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The horse quality in the south side of Barn 62 at Hollywood Park took a major jump in class in the last week with the arrivals of Eastern trainers Christophe Clement and Todd Pletcher.

Clement has sent eight horses to California, while Pletcher has more than 20, with more expected in coming weeks.

Judging from the results the respective trainers had in California last year, expectations are high for both barns. Clement won with 6 of 12 starters at the 2006 Hollywood Park fall meeting and into the early days of the Santa Anita winter meeting.

Front Court finds softer spot - and dirt

STICKNEY, Ill. - Darkness already is coming early in Chicago (get out your flashlights at about 4:30 p.m.), and so is the Friday feature.

The best race of 10 carded for Friday at Hawthorne is race 4, a third-level sprint allowance also open to $40,000 claimers that drew a competitive field of eight, only one of whom races under the allowance conditions. That is Front Court, who should be favored to do something he hasn't done in seven months - actually win a race.

Plenty of invaders for Maple Leaf

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It turns out that Monashee, who shipped in from Vancouver to attempt to solidify her case for a Sovereign Award, will not be the only serious invader in Saturday's Maple Leaf Stakes.

Cryptoquip, I'm In Love, and Dancing Band all will be checking in from south of the border for the $175,000 Maple Leaf, a 1 1/4-mile race for fillies and mares that has attracted a field of 12.

Rocky Gulch shifts gears for New Mexico Cup Day

Rocky Gulch will not be defending his title in the $180,000 Classic on New Mexico Cup Day on Sunday at Zia Park, but he will still be active on the richest card of the meet. Rocky Gulch has been entered in the $170,000 Sprint Championship, a six-furlong race that looks like a logical spot for the millionaire, who has made just one start since April.
