Gotta Have Her holds on

It took four tries, but Gotta Have Her finally won her first stakes in the $110,600 Harold Ramser Sr. Handicap on Sunday at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

Ridden by Richard Migliore, Gotta Have Her led throughout the one-mile turf race, holding off a late threat from Silky Smooth to win by three-quarters of a length. Gotta Have Her ($11.20) was timed in 1:34.16.

Runway Rosie finished third in the field of nine 3-year-old fillies, which did not include morning-line favorite Supposition, who was scratched early Sunday. Missvinski, the 2-1 favorite, finished last.

Inca King rebounds in Bryan Station upset

Inca King rebounded off two disappointing efforts by returning to top form Sunday, upsetting Distorted Reality and eight other 3-year-olds in the $150,000 Bryan Station Stakes at Keeneland.

With Shaun Bridgmohan riding for owner Bill Heiligbrodt and trainer Steve Asmussen, Inca King took over for longshot Revival Ridge after turning for home and was never threatened thereafter, winning by 3 3/4 lengths over Distorted Reality, the even-money favorite. Inca King, a gelding by Sir Cat, returned $22.60 to win after finishing a mile in 1:35.88 over a firm turf course.

Student Council eyes Japan Cup Dirt

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Student Council will skip the Oct. 27 Breeders' Cup Classic and will instead ship to California this weekend to prepare for a run in the Nov. 24 Japan Cup Dirt, owner Ro Parra announced Sunday.

Student Council won major races in his last two starts but nonetheless was widely regarded as an outsider in what is shaping up as an extremely tough renewal of the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park.

Bold Hawk getting better with each start

STICKNEY, Ill. - Save for slightly losing his focus after making the lead at the sixteenth pole, Bold Hawk did just about everything right winning the Hawthorne Derby in his stakes debut and fifth career start Saturday. What's remarkable is that just a few short months ago, Bold Hawk had virtually no idea what he was doing.

Bold Hawk, a gelded son of Silver Hawk, has tremendous size, but at first he had little idea of what to do with his body.

Deputiformer scores in stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Deputiformer, who had been knocking on the door in his last two maiden attempts, picked a good spot to crash through in Sunday's $253,300 Cup and Saucer here at Woodbine.

"He's always done things well," said Mike DePaulo, who trains Deputiformer for David James. "He's worked well, trained well, and has enough pedigree to be a good horse.

"We thought enough of him to supplement him to a stakes race for his first start."

Sir Gallovic holds off favorite

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Sir Gallovic withstood a furious stretch run by heavily favored True Metropolitan to win the $100,966 Grade 3 Premiers Handicap by a neck at Hastings on Sunday. True Metropolitan was very game in defeat, especially considering he was carrying 129 pounds going 1 3/8 miles.

Smokey Stover goes fast but easy

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Smokey Stover leaves Bay Meadows for Monmouth Park and the Breeders' Cup Sprint on Thursday after a strong final workout between races Sunday.

Trainer Greg Gilchrist, who heads east Friday, said Smokey Stover's 58.29-second five-furlong work under jockey Russell Baze was fine, although a bit faster than he wanted. Smokey Stover's fractions were 23.76 and 46.80. He broke off before the five-furlong pole and continued out well after crossing the finish line.

General Charley sets record in Hall of Fame

SELMA, Texas - General Charley set a course record Saturday night at Retama Park when he ran a mile and a sixteenth on turf in 1:40.65 to capture the $100,000 Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame Stakes.

The race was one of six statebred stakes on a program that came after the inductions of Carl Nafzger and Preston Carter Jr. into the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Purses for the stakes totaled $485,000 in what is annually the richest card of the meet at Retama.

Daytona wins Oak Tree Derby

ARCADIA, Calif. - Daytona won his first career stakes in his graded stakes debut in Saturday's $150,000 Oak Tree Derby at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

Daytona ($22.60) was always prominent in the Grade 2 race over 1 1/8 miles on turf. Ridden by Mike Smith, Daytona stalked pacesetter Asperity to the end of the backstretch, took the lead on the final turn and was not challenged through the stretch, winning by 4 1/4 lengths.
