Beulah surface to be overhauled

After four straight cancellations, Beulah Park was open for training Thursday.

Beulah's problems began after snow fell last Friday. The snow was removed from the track with a road grader, which also scraped off part of the track's cushion. The temperature rose Saturday, resulting in a sloppy surface over a frozen base, and racing was canceled. Rain this week prevented replacing the lost cushion material, and Beulah canceled its planned Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday cards.

Set Play takes shot in Starlet

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - The appeal of a $421,500 purse, a Grade 1 race, and competition that may have a few weak spots was too much for trainer Peter Miller to pass over with the filly Set Play in Saturday's Hollywood Starlet Stakes at Hollywood Park.

Set Play, the winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante in September, was entered on Wednesday, joining Country Star, the winner of the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland in October, as fillies that have won races at the highest level this year.

Purses move both up and down

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Purses at Aqueduct for the first three months of 2008 will be about 10 percent higher than they were over the corresponding period last year, but will be slightly less than they currently are, according to New York Racing Association officials.

Entering the Aqueduct fall meet in October, NYRA kept intact a 12 percent purse increase it started in early July at Belmont. That period included the first month of the inner track meet, which began Nov. 28.

Philly Park to make improvements

Philadelphia Park has agreed to make improvements to the racetrack's backstretch and pledged to restore the grandstand solely for horse racing fans.

Under the agreement, Philly Park will renovate all 36 barns, at a cost of about $500,000 apiece, over the next eight years, and refurbish each of the 12 dormitory facilities on the backside over the next four years.

Dutrow expecting minimal presence

Rick Dutrow was billed going into this Fair Grounds season as one of several prominent trainers whose new or returning strings in New Orleans promised to boost the quality of the racing. But more than three weeks into the meet, Dutrow is just now getting around to sending out his first Fair Grounds starter, a horse named Salute the Count, who looks like the horse to beat in Friday's seventh race, a $50,000 turf-sprint claimer. And there may not be many more to come.

Hawthorne cancels Wednesday

Racing at Hawthorne was cancelled after two races Wednesday because of potentially dangerous track conditions.

Rain and freezing rain had fallen at the track Monday and Tuesday, and temperatures that dropped below 20 degrees on Tuesday night played havoc with the racetrack. The track began to thaw from beneath the surface after training hours Wednesday morning and had turned into a sea of slop by race time.

Cave's Valley will focus on Eastern stakes

The connections of the promising Cave's Valley, who experienced his first career defeat last week in the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Jackpot at Delta Downs, will start mapping out a 3-year-old campaign for the horse next week. It could include races at his Laurel Park base and Aqueduct.

"We have quite a few options," said Michael Trombetta, who trains Cave's Valley. "For now, we'll keep him up north. We'll be looking in this corridor here."
